FA Cup Third Round Sees Major Upsets as Lower-League Teams Triumph

The FA Cup third round produced a series of stunning upsets, with lower-league teams defeating higher-ranked opponents. Notably, both Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace exited the tournament unexpectedly, falling to Wrexham and Macclesfield, respectively. This weekend’s results demonstrated the unpredictable nature of the competition, which often sees smaller clubs challenge more established teams.

Macclesfield Shocks Crystal Palace

In a remarkable turn of events, Macclesfield Town, currently positioned 14th in the National League North, eliminated defending FA Cup holders Crystal Palace by a score of 2-1. The match took place on January 6, 2024, at Macclesfield’s home ground, where they faced a Crystal Palace side ranked 117 places higher in the football hierarchy. Goals from Paul Dawson and Isaac Buckley-Richards secured the victory for Macclesfield, despite a late effort from Palace’s Yeremy Pino, who netted a free-kick to narrow the deficit.

Wayne Rooney was present at the game, observing his brother John manage the home team in this significant upset. The victory serves as one of the biggest surprises in FA Cup history, highlighting Macclesfield’s potential against higher-tier opposition.

Wigan Triumphs Over Preston North End

Another surprise came as Wigan Athletic, competing in League One, claimed a 1-0 victory against Championship side Preston North End at Deepdale. Harrison Bettoni’s deflected strike in the 75th minute proved decisive. Wigan’s manager, Ryan Lowe, expressed his satisfaction with the performance, emphasizing his team’s effective game plan and their ability to limit Preston’s scoring opportunities.

Lowe remarked, “I’m pleased for our fans, pleased for our lads. The game plan worked a treat.” He also noted the enthusiastic support from nearly 4,000 away fans, who out-sang the Preston supporters. Following the match, Lowe took a light-hearted jab at the Preston fans, celebrating the victory that returned him to his former club.

Preston’s manager, Paul Heckingbottom, criticized the pitch conditions, stating, “It’s a cow field. It’s disgusting, that’s what it is, but we have to play on it.” His comments reflect the frustration that can arise from challenging playing surfaces, especially in crucial matches.

Wrexham Advances Past Nottingham Forest

Wrexham’s thrilling encounter against Nottingham Forest culminated in a tense penalty shootout, with Wrexham emerging victorious 4-3 after a 3-3 draw over 120 minutes. The match, held at the SToK Cae Ras, marked a historic moment for the Welsh club, as it was their first encounter with Premier League opposition since the ownership of Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney began nearly five years ago.

Manager Paul Parkinson highlighted the significance of this victory for Wrexham’s ambitions, stating, “If you give them an inch, you’re going to get punished. We will analyse that and learn from it.” The win reinforces Wrexham’s ongoing journey from the National League to aspirations of competing at the highest levels of English football.

These results from the FA Cup third round serve as a reminder of the tournament’s charm, where underdogs can deliver astonishing performances against more favored teams. The excitement generated by these matches continues to capture the attention of football fans across the globe.
