Sky Sports Racing ambassador Hollie Doyle returns to competitive racing after a brief absence due to a minor injury. As she gears up for day one of the Qatar Goodwood Festival on Tuesday, Doyle has shared insights on her rides, expressing confidence in their potential.
Trueshan Aims for Glory
Among her notable mounts is the seasoned runner Trueshan, who is set to compete in the Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Stakes at 15:05. At nine years old, Trueshan faces the challenge of reclaiming his past glory, having previously won this prestigious race. Doyle, who recently rode him at trainer Alan King‘s yard, believes he retains the ability to compete effectively against younger challengers like Illinois, Scandinavia, and French Master.
Trueshan’s first race of the year was a Group One event in France, where he demonstrated competitiveness against seasoned opponents. Last autumn, he narrowly missed out on victory in the Group One Prix Royal-Oak at Saint Cloud, finishing just one and a half lengths behind the winner. If the ground conditions remain favorable, Doyle is optimistic that he can deliver a strong performance for his owners, the Singula Partnership.
Strong Contenders in Fillies’ Stakes
Doyle is particularly hopeful about the prospects of two fillies she rides for owner Imad Alsagar, including the promising Zgharta in the Ridgeview Fillies’ Stakes at 16:55. After a successful maiden victory at Newmarket in May, Zgharta’s performance at Royal Ascot showcased her potential despite a less than ideal start. Doyle believes Zgharta can navigate Goodwood’s undulating terrain effectively, even from a challenging draw in stall 13.
Another runner from Alsagar’s stable, Enchanting, is poised to excel in the Coral Golden Rewards Shaker Handicap at 15:45. A previous winner at Goodwood, Enchanting has shown exceptional form, but her recent performance in the Listed Land O’ Burns Fillies’ Stakes at Ayr was hampered by ground conditions. Doyle is confident that with the right circumstances, Enchanting can make an impact once again.
In the HKJC World Pool Lennox Stakes at 14:30, Doyle will ride Witness Stand, who faces a significant step up in class. Previously a winner at Goodwood, this gelding has displayed strong form, finishing just shy of victory in a recent Listed race. Doyle is eager to see how he performs under the increased pressure of this race.
Doyle’s final rides include Simply Sondheim in the Coral Chesterfield Cup Handicap at 13:20 and Musical Angel in the World Pool Bet With The Tote EBF Fillies’ Handicap at 17:30. While Simply Sondheim has faced challenges since a promising debut, his familiarity with Goodwood could work to his advantage. Meanwhile, Doyle remains hopeful that Musical Angel can recapture her earlier form and make a strong showing.
With a mix of experience and emerging talent, Doyle’s rides at the Qatar Goodwood Festival promise to deliver excitement on the opening day. As the festival unfolds, the performances of these horses will be closely watched by racing enthusiasts and industry experts alike.
