The New York Jets are set to welcome back edge rusher Jermaine Johnson, who has missed the last three games due to an ankle injury. Johnson’s return comes at a crucial time as the Jets, currently the NFL’s only winless team with a record of 0-5, prepare to face the Denver Broncos at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London on Sunday.
Johnson’s presence on the field could provide the much-needed spark for a defense that has struggled significantly this season. Quinnen Williams, the Jets’ star defensive tackle, recently expressed concern over the team’s defensive performance, calling it “probably the worst defense in the league.” He emphasized the importance of Johnson’s return, stating, “He does bring an edge to him and he’s another guy that can get after the quarterback.”
The Jets have seen a dramatic decline in their pass rush. After achieving four sacks in their season opener, the team has managed only three sacks over the next four games. Notably, last week against a weakened Dallas Cowboys offensive line, they recorded just one sack, which was attributed to a give-up play by quarterback Dak Prescott. This lack of pressure has contributed to the Jets allowing an average of 31.4 points per game, ranking them among the bottom defenses in the league.
Williams noted the team’s struggles, saying, “We have to find a way to get to the quarterback and affect the quarterback because I think that’s the No. 1 thing that’s going to help this defense ascend and go to the next direction.” He highlighted the urgency for improvement, especially given that the Jets have yet to secure a single takeaway this season—an unprecedented feat for a team through its first five games.
Johnson’s return, while anticipated, may come with challenges. Having previously recorded a career-high 7.5 sacks in 2023 and earning a Pro Bowl selection as an injury replacement, Johnson missed the final 15 games last season due to a torn Achilles. After returning for the current season, he sustained his ankle injury in Week 2. He acknowledged that he may be a bit rusty but remains confident in his abilities. “No disrespect to any guys out that are out there now, but I just know what I can do, kind of the difference I can make on defense,” Johnson stated.
The upcoming matchup against the Broncos, who hold a record of 3-2, presents a formidable challenge. Quarterback Bo Nix has shown resilience, having been sacked only five times this season.
In addition to Johnson’s return, the Jets received news that kickoff returner Kene Nwangwu has been cleared to play after missing four games due to a hamstring injury. Since his absence, the Jets have experimented with four different returners, leading to two releases and one injury. Nwangwu’s return could bolster the Jets’ special teams as they continue to seek their first victory of the season.
With the stakes high and pressure mounting, the Jets will look to Johnson to reinvigorate their defense and help turn around their challenging season.
