Jimmy Hanrahan, a highly regarded midfielder, is set to elevate his career in the Ovens and Murray Football League after signing with Yarrawonga for the upcoming season. Hanrahan, known for his consistency on the field, arrives at JC Lowe Oval following a successful tenure at Rutherglen and the Power, where he earned back-to-back best and fairest awards in 2021 and 2022.
Following a year away from football in 2023, Hanrahan made a significant impact upon his return to the sport with CDHBU. He secured the best and fairest award in his first senior season and finished as the runner-up in this year’s club best and fairest. Additionally, he ranked fourth in the Azzi medal and represented the interleague team, showcasing his talent and dedication.
Motivation Behind the Move
Hanrahan expressed that the chance to play alongside his close friend, Cam Wilson, who won the best and fairest at Yarrawonga, significantly influenced his decision to transfer. “Cam is one of my best mates, and the club reached out to me about having a crack in the O&M,” Hanrahan remarked. He initially hesitated but later consulted with trusted peers, whose advice encouraged him to challenge himself at a higher level.
At 25 years old, Hanrahan feels this is the right time for the move. “It was never going to be an easy decision for me, and I love the club and love the position that we were in,” he acknowledged. “But it was more a case of challenging myself now. In the future, when I return to the club, I will still have more to give.”
Looking Ahead
Recognized as one of the top midfielders in the Hume league, Hanrahan is enthusiastic about joining the Pigeons, who are eager to improve after missing the finals last season. “I’m super excited and keen to get into it,” he said. “They look to be a promising side for next season, and I am keen to see how far we can go next year.”
Reflecting on his previous experience in the Ovens and Murray, Hanrahan recalled his time with Corowa in 2017, where he played a few senior matches before moving away. Since returning to the field post-COVID, he has maintained an impressive record, achieving three best and fairest awards and a runner-up finish over four seasons.
Despite a strong performance this year, he lost out on the best and fairest to high-profile recruit Dean Waugh. “I was happy with my season, but Dean was a deserved winner and certainly lived up to the hype of being one of the best recruits in the competition,” Hanrahan stated.
Despite the challenges, Hanrahan remains optimistic about the future. “It was disappointing to lose the elimination final to Jindera after we finished third on the ladder. But that’s footy. Hopefully, the club can bounce back next year.” His commitment to both personal growth and team success underscores his determination as he embarks on this new chapter with Yarrawonga.
