Jordan Silk’s resilient half-century helped Tasmania post a total of 239 all out on the opening day of their Sheffield Shield match against Western Australia at the WACA Ground. Silk scored 55 runs off 142 balls, providing much-needed stability to Tasmania’s innings. In response, Western Australia faced significant pressure, ending the day at 5-64 after losing their top order quickly.
Western Australia’s innings got off to a disastrous start as opener Sam Whiteman was dismissed for a golden duck on the very first ball. Tasmanian fast bowler Gabe Bell made an immediate impact, claiming three wickets for just 21 runs. Silk’s innings was crucial in countering a fierce WA bowling attack, chiefly led by Cameron Gannon, who took 4-49 and played a pivotal role in Tasmania’s early struggles.
In Tasmania’s first innings, Silk’s performance was a highlight amidst a flurry of wickets. His knock came after a promising start from his teammates, particularly from Jake Weatherald, who struck a brisk 44 runs off 58 balls. Weatherald and his opening partner, Caleb Jewell, combined for a solid 60-run partnership before Jewell fell to Gannon, caught by wicketkeeper Joel Curtis.
Weatherald’s dismissal followed shortly as he attempted a pull shot but edged a short delivery to Jhye Richardson at gully. Gannon’s third wicket was Tim Ward, who was caught and bowled, leaving Tasmania in a precarious position. Despite these setbacks, Beau Webster displayed good form with a quick 24 runs before also falling to Crouch, who continued to apply pressure.
The Tasmanian innings was characterized by fluctuating fortunes as they slumped to 5-128 before Silk and Jake Doran stabilized the innings with a partnership of 56 runs. Ultimately, Gannon returned to dismiss Silk, who edged a delivery that seamed in, handing Curtis his third catch of the day.
As day one concluded, Tasmania’s lower order struggled against persistent bowling from Western Australia. Richardson’s economical bowling saw him finish with figures of 1-29 from his 16 overs, while spinner Corey Rocchiccioli took 2-51 from 17 overs. With the match finely poised, both teams will look to capitalize on their respective strengths as the Sheffield Shield clash continues.
