Karl-Anthony Towns Sells Rare MLB Card for $72,000 at Auction

New York Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns has made headlines not just for his performance on the court but also for his success in the collectibles market. In October 2024, Towns pulled a one-of-a-kind signed MLB logo patch card featuring Yoshinobu Yamamoto from the 2024 Topps Inception set. That card recently sold for an impressive $72,000 at auction, including the buyer’s premium, through Fanatics Collect.

The sale reflects the increasing interest in sports memorabilia, particularly as players like Yamamoto rise to prominence. Following his standout performance in the 2025 World Series, where he was named the Most Valuable Player, the card sparked a competitive bidding war, resulting in 54 bids on Fanatics’ marketplace. This sale marks a significant milestone, as it is the highest price ever paid for a Yamamoto card, surpassing the previous record of $40,260 for a 2024 Topps Chrome Yamamoto Superfractor sold last December.

Towns has recently embraced a new venture by launching an Instagram account dedicated to his passion for card collecting. He engages with fans by filming himself opening packs across various sports. In the collectibles community, this practice is commonly referred to as “breaking.” During these sessions, Towns displays the cost of each box, tracking the value of cards as they are revealed.

In a recent video, Towns humorously suggested that, based on Yamamoto’s World Series performance, the Los Angeles Dodgers should consider offering the pitcher an additional $300 million. This blend of sports and commerce captures the excitement surrounding both his NBA career and his burgeoning interest in collectibles.

As the market for sports cards continues to evolve, Towns stands out as an athlete who successfully navigates both his professional sports career and the dynamic world of card collecting. His ability to connect with fans through social media not only enhances his brand but also contributes to the growing popularity of sports memorabilia as a serious investment avenue.
