Mandhana Powers India to Victory, Sets Up Semifinal Clash with Australia

India secured a commanding victory over New Zealand in the ICC Women’s World Cup, setting the stage for a highly anticipated semifinal clash against Australia. The match took place at the DY Patil Stadium on March 15, 2024, where India finished fourth in the group table, necessitating a showdown with the league winners. Australia and South Africa are set to compete for the top group position, with the winner facing India in Guwahati next Wednesday.

A standout performance from Smriti Mandhana and Pratika Rawal propelled India to a total of 340 runs for three wickets in their allotted 49 overs, a record score for the tournament. Mandhana scored 109 runs off 95 balls, while Rawal achieved her maiden World Cup century with 122 runs off 134 deliveries. Together, they forged a remarkable partnership of 212 runs, marking only the third instance of a double-century opening stand in women’s World Cup history.

India’s innings began with Mandhana reaching her half-century off 49 balls and later her century off 88. Rawal, not to be outdone, secured her second ODI century off 122 balls. Jemimah Rodrigues contributed significantly with an unbeaten 76 runs from 55 balls, further solidifying India’s dominance.

Rain interruptions complicated the game, but despite losing two hours of play, India’s total of 340 became their highest score of the tournament. New Zealand faced a revised target of 325 runs due to the rain and struggled to keep pace. Despite an impressive 81 runs from Brooke Halliday, New Zealand could not mount a successful chase, ultimately falling short and being eliminated from the tournament.

Following the match, Mandhana expressed relief and pride in her performance, noting the pressure of the previous games. “The last three games were really tough — we played good cricket, but we did not win,” she stated, acknowledging Rawal’s contribution and emphasizing teamwork.

New Zealand’s captain Sophie Devine lamented the team’s disappointing exit, stating, “We are incredibly disappointed and gutted … bloody frustrating tournament.” The White Ferns concluded their campaign after suffering three defeats along with two rain-affected no-results, leaving them unable to advance.

As India prepares for their semifinal against Australia, expectations are high. India seeks to leverage the momentum from this emphatic victory, aiming for nothing short of success in their home tournament. With both teams showcasing their prowess, the upcoming clash promises to be an exhilarating encounter for cricket fans worldwide.
