Melbourne Marathon 2025: Olympians and Thousands Hit the Streets

The Melbourne Marathon 2025 kicked off this morning, attracting an estimated 42,000 participants to the city’s streets. Athletes from various backgrounds, including Olympians and celebrities, joined local runners for a day of sporting achievement and community spirit. The main event, the Nike Melbourne Marathon, began at 6:30 AM, with several other races scheduled throughout the morning.

Participants in the marathon will run a distance of 42 kilometres, starting on Batman Avenue near Rod Laver Arena and finishing on the iconic turf of the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The atmosphere at the start line was vibrant, with the smell of liniment in the air and the sound of drums energizing the crowd.

The day is filled with various events, including the Sri Lankan Airlines 10km run starting at 7:00 AM and the Nike Wheelchair Marathon at 7:25 AM. The Nike Half Marathon commenced shortly after at 7:30 AM, while the Dairy Farmers 5km run and the Chobani fit walk are set to begin at 11:15 AM and 11:45 AM, respectively.

Weather conditions for the marathon were relatively cool this morning, with temperatures around 10 degrees Celsius at the start, expected to rise to 20 degrees later in the day. Although the forecast suggested a high chance of showers, they are anticipated to arrive later in the afternoon and evening, allowing participants to enjoy the early hours without rain.

This year’s event marks the 47th annual Melbourne Marathon, a storied tradition that began in 1978. The inaugural marathon started in Frankston and concluded at Melbourne Town Hall. The only interruption in its history occurred in 2020, when the pandemic led to cancellations due to lockdown measures in Melbourne.

Organisers reported that there are 13,000 registered participants for the marathon event, a significant increase attributed to efforts aimed at optimizing the course and enhancing the overall runner experience. The marathon route covers a scenic path through key Melbourne locations, including Flinders Street, Southbank, St Kilda Road, Albert Park, St Kilda, Elwood, and Port Melbourne.

As the runners embark on their journeys today, the Melbourne Marathon continues to celebrate both athleticism and community, showcasing the city’s commitment to health and fitness. Participants and spectators alike are poised for a memorable day filled with triumphs and personal achievements.
