Miami Dolphins Fire Coach Mike McDaniel After Disappointing Season

The Miami Dolphins have terminated head coach Mike McDaniel following a disappointing 7-10 season, marking a significant shift for a team that once showed considerable promise in the NFL. The Dolphins began the 2025 season with a dismal record, losing seven of their first nine games. Although they managed a four-game winning streak that brought hope, the team faltered again, losing two consecutive matches, including one to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

McDaniel’s firing comes on the heels of a broader organizational overhaul, which included the dismissal of general manager Chris Grier in October. Just two years prior, the Dolphins were in a strong position, leading the Buffalo Bills by three games in December and vying for the AFC’s top seed. However, a devastating loss to the Tennessee Titans in December 2023, where Miami squandered a 14-point lead in the final three minutes, marked the beginning of a downward spiral. Since that defeat, the Dolphins have recorded a 17-21 win-loss record.

Despite high-profile roster changes over the past four years, including trades for star players like Tyreek Hill and Bradley Chubb, the Dolphins found themselves needing a cultural reset this offseason. McDaniel’s tenure, which started with promise, ended with the team missing the playoffs for the first time under his leadership in 2024. A dismal opening to the 2025 season—including a heavy loss to the Indianapolis Colts and injuries to key players like Hill—ultimately sealed McDaniel’s fate.

Team owner Stephen Ross expressed conflicted feelings about the decision after a meeting with McDaniel. While Ross appreciated McDaniel’s intelligence and offensive strategy, he felt that the team’s performance had not improved sufficiently. Multiple sources indicated that McDaniel retained player support, but after four years, acceptable results were necessary.

Who Will Lead the Dolphins Next?

The search for McDaniel’s replacement is underway, with several potential candidates emerging. Defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver and offensive coordinator Frank Smith are strong internal options, both well-regarded by players. If the Dolphins choose to look externally, past head coaches like John Harbaugh and Mike McCarthy are available, although Ross has historically opted for coaches without prior head coaching experience.

While the decision to fire McDaniel was made independent of Harbaugh’s recent availability, speculation continues about the direction the Dolphins will take. Other candidates could include innovative minds like Jeff Hafley from the Green Bay Packers or Joe Brady from the Buffalo Bills, both of whom represent a new wave of coaching talent.

Future Considerations for the Dolphins

McDaniel’s future remains uncertain, but he is likely to attract interest for coordinator or head coaching roles. His 35-33 record in Miami reflects a commendable effort, particularly without an elite quarterback. Teams like the Cleveland Browns, who have been eyeing McDaniel for his offensive skills, could soon reach out.

Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa also faces an uncertain future after being benched late in the season. Currently in the first year of a $212.1 million extension, releasing him could result in nearly $100 million in dead cap space. However, a regime change may prompt the Dolphins to seek competition for Tagovailoa or potentially a new quarterback altogether.

The Dolphins are expected to undergo significant roster changes this offseason. With 25 pending free agents and potential cap savings tied to players like Hill and Chubb, the team’s future direction is in flux. Whether under interim general manager Champ Kelly or a new hire, the Dolphins will likely seek to reshape a roster that has not contended for the playoffs in recent years.

As the Dolphins prepare for their next chapter, they face crucial decisions that will shape the franchise for years to come, particularly regarding draft strategy and potential trades. The primary focus will likely center on rebuilding a secondary that has been weakened over recent seasons, with potential targets emerging from collegiate ranks. The team’s selection at No. 11 in the upcoming draft will be pivotal as they aim to regain their competitive edge.
