The Australian Boomers have named their squad for the upcoming FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers, with Mitch Creek taking center stage as he returns after a seven-year absence. Basketball Australia confirmed Creek’s inclusion following earlier reports from Fox Sports Australia, and the roster showcases a blend of seasoned players alongside promising newcomers.
Creek’s participation comes after the Boomers secured a convincing 2–0 series victory over the New Zealand Tall Blacks last year in Tasmania. His leadership is particularly crucial as the squad prepares for their matches against Guam and the Philippines. This will be the Boomers’ first game in Manila since the well-remembered ‘Basketbrawl’ incident, which resulted in the suspension of 13 players.
The lineup features familiar faces such as Jack White, David Okwera, Sam Froling, Reyne Smith, and two-time Olympian Nick Kay. Creek’s return adds depth and experience to a team that will also see several players making their senior international debuts, including Tanner Krebs, Jacob Holt, and Kody Stattmann. Elijah Pepper and Isaac White are also back, having previously represented the Boomers.
The Boomers will kick off their qualifying campaign against Guam on February 26, 2024, at the University of Guam Field House in Mangilao. They will then face the Philippines on March 1, 2024, at the Mall of Asia Arena in Metro Manila. The matches are critical as Australia and the Philippines are currently tied at the top of Group A, each holding a record of 2–0.
John Rillie will lead the team as head coach, supported by assistants Luke Brennan, Robbie McKinlay, and David Barlow. The upcoming games are set to reignite the competitive spirit between these nations, promising an exciting display of basketball.
The full Boomers squad for the qualifiers includes:
– Jack White (Mersin MSK)
– Tom Wilson (Melbourne United)
– Kody Stattmann (Cairns Taipans)
– Jacob Holt (Brisbane Bullets)
– Tanner Krebs (Melbourne United)

– Sam Froling (Illawarra Hawks)

The upcoming qualifiers present an opportunity for the Boomers to solidify their standing in international basketball and build momentum ahead of future competitions. With a mix of experience and new talent, the team is poised to make a significant impact on the court.
