The NFL witnessed significant upheaval on March 12, 2024, as four head coaches were dismissed following disappointing seasons. The Arizona Cardinals, Las Vegas Raiders, and Cleveland Browns joined the Atlanta Falcons in making coaching changes, marking a critical moment for these franchises as they aim to rebuild.
The Raiders parted ways with Pete Carroll after a tumultuous season that saw the team finish with a record of 3-14. Carroll, who is 74 years old, had previously coached the New York Jets, New England Patriots, and the Seattle Seahawks, where he led the team to a Super Bowl victory in 2014. His overall coaching record in the NFL stands at 173 wins, 134 losses, and one tie over 19 seasons.
Following the decision, Mark Davis, the majority owner of the Raiders, announced that part-owner Tom Brady, a seven-time Super Bowl champion, would play a pivotal role in selecting the next head coach. “Moving forward, general manager John Spytek will lead all football operations in close collaboration with Tom Brady,” Davis stated in a press release. “Together, they will guide football decisions with a shared focus on leadership, culture, and alignment with the organisation’s long-term vision and goals.”
The Raiders concluded their season with a narrow 14-12 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs, ending a painful ten-game losing streak.
Meanwhile, the Arizona Cardinals also made a change, firing head coach Jonathan Gannon after a dismal 3-14 season. Gannon’s tenure with the Cardinals lasted three years, during which the team recorded a total of 15 wins against 36 losses. Over the past decade, the Cardinals have reached the playoffs only once, with a winning record achieved just once during this stretch.
The Cleveland Browns took similar action by dismissing Kevin Stefanski after six seasons. Stefanski’s record with the Browns stands at 45 wins and 56 losses. He guided the team to its first playoff victory since 1994 in 2020 and was named NFL Coach of the Year twice, in 2020 and 2023. However, following a disappointing 5-12 campaign, owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam decided a change at the head coaching position was necessary. “We appreciate all his hard work and dedication to our organisation, but our results over the last two seasons have not been satisfactory,” they stated.
Stefanski is expected to attract interest from other teams in need of head coaches, as many analysts believe his firing reflects broader issues within the Browns organization rather than his coaching abilities. The disastrous trade for quarterback Deshaun Watson, which involved sending three first-round picks to the Houston Texans, has been cited as a pivotal moment for the franchise. Watson’s five-year, fully guaranteed contract worth $230 million has been described by sports commentators as a burden that has hindered the team’s progress.
Browns general manager Andrew Berry will remain with the team, expressing disappointment over the performance during his tenure. “I’m disappointed that we could not accomplish more together,” Berry said. “Now, our attention turns to the search for the person to lead and develop what will be a young offense with heavy investment over the next six months.”
The shake-up began on March 11, when Raheem Morris, head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, was fired shortly after concluding an 8-9 season with a victory over the New Orleans Saints. Falcons owner Arthur Blank acknowledged the team’s shortcomings, stating, “No statement can change the disappointment of the past several seasons.” He emphasized the need for accountability, noting that the team should be competing at a higher level.
As these franchises embark on the search for new leadership, the upcoming NFL Draft in April will play a crucial role in shaping their futures. Each team’s ability to make strategic choices will be essential as they aim to reverse their recent misfortunes and rebuild for the seasons ahead.
