Over 8,000 Kids Enjoy Free Access to Hedland Aquatic Centres

More than 8,000 kids have visted both Gratwick Aquatic Centre and South Hedland Aquatic Centre for free over the the 2025/26 summer season so far.

More than 8,000 children have taken advantage of the Hedland Splash program, which offers free entry to the Gratwick Aquatic Centre and South Hedland Aquatic Centre this summer. This initiative, a collaboration between the Town of Port Hedland and Fortescue, allows children under the age of 12 to access both aquatic facilities at no cost, promoting health and social interaction among local youth.

Fortescue’s Director of Approvals, Communities and Services, Rosli Wheelock, highlighted the program’s significance for the local families in Hedland. “Hedland Splash makes a real difference for local families, especially over the long Pilbara summer. Free access removes a cost barrier and gives kids a place to be active, cool off, and spend time with friends,” he stated.

The Hedland Splash program started as a response to extreme heat conditions, originally aimed at providing relief during heatwaves. Its growing popularity has established it as a vital element of the local summer experience in Port Hedland. With the Pilbara region experiencing record high temperatures recently, multiple heatwave warnings were issued by the Bureau of Meteorology.

Program Details and Community Impact

The program commenced at the end of September 2025 and will continue until April 19, 2026. During this period, children can enjoy free access to both aquatic centres during normal operating hours. Town officials remind parents that while entry is free, all children under 12 must be supervised by a responsible adult at all times.

This initiative not only provides a safe and enjoyable environment for children but also encourages families to engage with the community. As the summer months draw to a close, the Hedland Splash program remains an opportunity for families to make the most of the warm weather.

In summary, the Hedland Splash program has successfully attracted thousands of young visitors to local aquatic facilities, fostering a sense of community and promoting active lifestyles among children in Port Hedland.
