The Victorian Pickleball Championships is currently underway at the Hume Tennis and Community Centre in Craigieburn, attracting an impressive 950 players from across Victoria and beyond. This weekend-long event, which began on March 6, 2025, marks a significant milestone as the largest pickleball tournament ever held in the state.
According to Tim Connelly, director of Hume Tennis, the sport has experienced a remarkable surge in interest. “It is generating quite a bit of interest,” he remarked, noting that players have traveled from various regions to participate. The growing enthusiasm for pickleball is reflected in the membership statistics from Pickleball Victoria, which reported a notable 61 percent increase in memberships during the past year.
Excitement and Community Engagement
The tournament kicked off with singles matches and will progress to doubles competitions starting tomorrow. Connelly highlighted the quality of play, stating, “The singles are having really good hit-outs, and there will be even more action from tomorrow when the doubles start.” This exciting atmosphere invites spectators to enjoy the competition, with events taking place on 40 outdoor courts.
The weekend festivities are designed to engage the local community, with amenities including lounge chairs, shaded viewing areas, and barbeque lunches. Market stalls will also be available for attendees. Free parking is accessible at the community centre, located at 225 Marathon Boulevard, Craigieburn. The event runs daily until March 9, 2025, providing ample opportunities for spectators and families to experience the action.
