Raiders Players Push Back Against Tanking Talk After Loss

The Las Vegas Raiders faced intense criticism following a 34-10 loss to the New York Giants on January 7, 2024. This defeat marked the team’s tenth consecutive loss, dropping their record to 2-14. Amid growing discussions around the possibility of the team “tanking” to secure the No. 1 pick in the upcoming NFL draft, players expressed their frustration with the narrative surrounding their performance.

Defensive tackle Jonah Laulu voiced his displeasure, stating, “I hate that’s what people are saying or thinking. We’re not trying to lose.” Laulu emphasized his commitment to giving his best effort, highlighting the uncertainty of his future with the team. ESPN Analytics reported that the Raiders now have an 80% chance of obtaining the top draft pick, a statistic that some players are trying to distance themselves from.

Injuries and Future Focus

Prior to the game against the Giants, the Raiders made significant roster decisions, placing tight end Brock Bowers, safety Jeremy Chinn, and defensive end Maxx Crosby on injured reserve. Crosby, who is expected to undergo knee surgery, had expressed a desire to help the team rather than focus on draft position. He noted, “I don’t care about the No. 1 pick; my focus is on playing at my best.”

Cornerback Eric Stokes, another bright spot in the Raiders’ defense, echoed Crosby’s sentiments. “If y’all are trying to tank, don’t throw it my way then,” Stokes remarked. “I’m trying to be the best person I can be. If anybody is trying to tank, y’all might as well take me out, too.”

Despite the players’ commitment to winning, they recognize the potential benefits of securing the top draft pick. Wide receiver Tre Tucker commented, “We’ve got a lot of young guys that are really good. We’re super close but far away at the same time.”

Upcoming Challenges and Coaching Outlook

The Raiders’ next game against the Kansas City Chiefs presents further challenges, especially with starting quarterback Geno Smith likely sidelined due to a high ankle sprain sustained during the Giants game. Smith, who completed 20 of 28 passes for 176 yards and a touchdown before his injury, has had a difficult season, increasing his total interceptions to 17, the highest since his rookie year in 2013.

Head coach Pete Carroll acknowledged the difficulties faced this season, the worst of his coaching career, but stated he feels supported by the team’s ownership. “From all the guys I’ve talked to, I do feel like I have their support,” Carroll remarked, though he did not confirm whether this support guarantees his return for a second season.

Carroll, who signed a three-year deal with a fourth-year team option after a year away from coaching, emphasized the importance of communication within the organization. “We’re getting along great. We’re communicating really well,” he said, despite the ongoing challenges.

As the Raiders prepare for their final game of the season, the focus will remain on player performance and the potential implications of their draft position. With a loss to the Chiefs, the team could secure the coveted No. 1 pick, but players are determined to finish the season strong, irrespective of the speculation surrounding their future.
