Patrick Reed secured a stunning victory at the Dubai Desert Classic, winning a prize of $1.5 million on January 28, 2024. The American golfer finished with a total score of 14-under 274, marking his twelfth title worldwide. Reed showcased a strong performance throughout the tournament, entering the final round with a commanding four-shot lead over Spain’s David Puig.
Reed’s strategy on the final day was cautious, allowing his lead to dwindle to just two strokes midway through the round. However, a critical birdie on the par-five 13th hole, coupled with a bogey from Puig, shifted momentum back in Reed’s favor. He ultimately cruised to victory, leaving Puig to finish in a tie for seventh after a disappointing final round of 75.
The win at the Emirates Golf Club ensures Reed’s exemption from all four major championships this year. “It’s always nice to lock up the majors,” Reed stated following his victory. He is currently negotiating a new contract to continue his participation in LIV Golf, which is set to begin on February 4, 2024, in Saudi Arabia.
Reed’s performance overshadowed others in the field, including Andy Sullivan from England, who finished alone in second place with a score of 71. French golfer Julien Guerrier followed closely behind, finishing another stroke back with a score of 69. In contrast, Rory McIlroy, a prominent competitor, struggled throughout the tournament and ended in a tie for 33rd place after two rounds of 73. This marked McIlroy’s first finish outside the top 30 since he missed the cut at the Canadian Open in June 2023.
Among other competitors, Australian golfer David Micheluzzi concluded the event in a tie for 49th after a final round of 72, finishing the tournament at one-over par. Reed’s triumph in Dubai not only enhances his financial standing but also reinforces his status within the golfing community as he prepares for the upcoming LIV Golf season.
