Queensland opener Matt Renshaw has significantly bolstered his chances for selection in the upcoming Ashes series by scoring a century against Tasmania in the Sheffield Shield. His unbeaten score of 114 came during the first round of matches, positioning him as a key contender for a top-order spot in the national team. After two days of play at Allan Border Field, Renshaw emerged as the standout performer, especially as selectors evaluate potential candidates ahead of the first Ashes Test on November 21, 2023.
Strong Performances from Queensland’s Top Order
Renshaw’s century was complemented by solid contributions from his teammates. Usman Khawaja scored 69 runs, and Marcus Labuschagne added 54, helping Queensland to a strong position at 1-248 after bowling out Tasmania for 379. Renshaw’s innings included 14 boundaries and a six, delivered over 214 balls, reflecting his ability to capitalize on the chances presented to him.
In contrast, fellow openers struggled in Perth’s challenging conditions. Sam Konstas and Cameron Bancroft were dismissed early, while Marcus Harris was run out for 61 at Adelaide Oval when looking set for a bigger score. Tasmanian opener Jake Weatherald also had a commendable performance, scoring 67 runs.
Renshaw Focuses on Performance Amid Selection Talk
Renshaw, who last played for Australia in February 2022 against India, expressed his determination to focus on his game rather than the surrounding speculation regarding Ashes selection. “It’s hard—you have to get rid of a lot of things, external noise, off your phone and stuff, but I just want to try and go out there and play,” he stated. His ability to maintain composure under pressure is critical as he aims to secure his spot in the national team.
He acknowledged the importance of his performance for Queensland, emphasizing, “I know that when I’m doing my job for Queensland, opening the batting well, we’re generally winning games.” Renshaw highlighted the challenge of the match but felt confident about the team’s position moving forward. “There were some tough periods, but a really good position for the team now,” he added.
Looking ahead, Renshaw and his team aim to build a substantial first-innings lead on the third day. As cracks begin to appear in the wicket, the focus will be on maximizing their runs to set a challenging target for Tasmania.
With his impressive century, Renshaw’s aspirations for an Ashes recall have gained momentum, making him a player to watch as the series approaches.
