Rugby League Weekend Shines Before Drama Strikes Titans

The weekend of rugby league delivered exhilarating moments but fell short of lasting peace, as the Gold Coast Titans confirmed the sacking of coach Des Hasler by Monday morning. This marked the fifth coaching change for the Titans in just 11 years, cutting short what had been a relatively drama-free weekend in the sport.

Fans were treated to remarkable highlights, including Andrew Voss’s celebrated commentary during the Raiders’ stunning 95-metre try, a moment already being compared to legendary calls such as Ray Warren’s iconic statement during the 1994 Origin match. Voss described the weekend’s events as “the most remarkable rugby league moment in the most remarkable rugby league season.”

Unforgettable Performances

The excitement began with Ethan Strange and Kaeo Weekes showcasing their skills, but the standout moment came from Taylan May, who replicated one of the most famous tries in Wests Tigers history at Leichhardt Oval. As the Tigers celebrated the 20th anniversary of their 2005 grand final victory over the Cowboys, May’s try mirrored Benji Marshall‘s legendary play from that day, perfectly timed just before halftime.

Earlier in the weekend, Mark Nawaqanitawase delivered a stunning flick pass that has become a signature of his play style. The rugby convert has been showcasing his skills consistently, turning heads with audacious plays. Trent Robinson, coach of the Sydney Roosters, noted that rugby’s less risk-averse nature allows players to take more chances, a sentiment echoed by the growing number of NRL players adopting similar techniques.

Parramatta also exhibited their talent, while the Roosters faced challenges with their handling. On the other hand, Tyrone Munro of South Sydney and Tolu Koula of Manly each scored impressive long-range tries, further solidifying their status as two of the league’s most promising young talents.

Despite the ongoing upheaval in the sport, veterans Daly Cherry-Evans and Ben Hunt celebrated significant milestones, each marking 350 games in the NRL. Their achievements served as a reminder of the enduring presence of seasoned players in a league often characterized by rapid turnover and controversy.

Drama Resumes with Coaching Changes

By Monday morning, the excitement of the weekend faded as the Titans announced the departure of Hasler. The news came amidst ongoing challenges for the club, which has struggled to find stability in recent years. Josh Hannay has now been appointed to steer the team forward, tasked with the difficult job of restoring relevance to the Titans.

As the dust settled, off-field dramas continued to swirl, particularly involving Brandon Smith, who found himself in the headlines for less-than-favorable reasons. Additionally, the Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) began addressing issues of foul play, ensuring that the focus on player conduct remains paramount.

While the weekend provided a brief respite from the usual controversies that often plague the sport, rugby league remains a captivating and unpredictable arena. With its blend of excitement and drama, the game continues to captivate fans, who eagerly await what comes next in this ever-evolving spectacle.
