In a thrilling encounter at the ICC World Cup, South Africa edged out Afghanistan in a nail-biting match that concluded with two super overs. After posting a target of 187 runs, Afghanistan’s strong performance set the stage for an intense finish, ultimately resulting in South Africa’s victory.
South Africa batted first, setting a challenging target of 187 runs. Afghanistan responded with determination, led by a remarkable innings from opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who scored 84 runs off 42 balls. With the match reaching a climax, the first super over began after both teams ended their innings tied.
In the initial super over, Afghanistan managed to score 17 runs, putting pressure on South Africa. Fast bowler Farooqi was in a position to secure a win for Afghanistan by restricting South Africa to just 11 runs with one ball remaining. However, Tristan Stubbs launched a six, leveling the scores once again and forcing a second super over.
Second Super Over Drama Unfolds
In the second super over, South Africa took the lead by scoring 23 runs, thanks to the combined efforts of David Miller and Stubbs, who hit three sixes. The pressure shifted back to Afghanistan as spinner Keshav Maharaj opened the over with a wicket and two dot balls, leaving Afghanistan needing 24 runs from four balls.
Gurbaz, undeterred and with nothing to lose, delivered an extraordinary performance. He hit three consecutive sixes, bringing the requirement down to just six runs off the final ball. A wide bowled by Maharaj reduced the target to five runs from one delivery, raising hopes for yet another super over. But in a dramatic twist, Maharaj dismissed Gurbaz, who was caught at backward point, sealing South Africa’s victory.
South Africa’s Lungi Ngidi, who claimed three wickets for 26 runs during the match and bowled the first super over, was named player of the match. Expressing his relief after the intense game, Ngidi stated, “I’ve lost so much weight today. I’ve never been that stressed in my life in a cricket game. Being able to win two super overs with our hitters hitting like that… very happy.”
This victory marks South Africa’s second win in the tournament, having previously secured a victory against Canada. In contrast, Afghanistan’s record now stands at 0-2, following their earlier loss to New Zealand. With only the top two teams from each of the four groups advancing to the Super Eights, Afghanistan faces an uphill battle to progress in the tournament.
As the competition continues, both teams will look to build on their performances. The World Cup stage is set for more gripping encounters as teams vie for the coveted title.
