Starc Confident in New Bowlers as Australia Faces England in Ashes Opener

Mitchell Starc will lead Australia’s bowling attack in the first Test against England at Perth Stadium on March 15, 2024, despite the absence of key players Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood. Starc, who famously took a wicket with the first ball of the 2021-22 Ashes, expressed confidence in the replacement bowlers stepping up for this crucial match.

Brendan Doggett is poised to make his Test debut after an impressive career in the Sheffield Shield, where he has taken 190 wickets for Queensland and South Australia. He will join Starc and Scott Boland, who is preparing for his 15th Test match. The loss of Cummins and Hazlewood represents a significant blow to the team, as they collectively bring 147 Tests of experience.

“Sadly, injuries in fast bowling happen,” Starc said on Wednesday. “And it just so happened with two key men down, heading into the first Test. But good to see the depth in the squad.” He acknowledged Boland’s proven abilities and noted that Doggett is coming off a strong performance. Veteran Michael Neser is also available, adding to Australia’s pace options.

This series-opener marks a notable shift for Australia, as it is the first time since December 2022 that the team will begin a Test without two of its leading fast bowlers. Hazlewood, who has faced numerous injuries in recent years, was in fine form before suffering a hamstring injury.

Cummins is nearing full fitness after recovering from a serious back injury. He has been seen bowling at full pace during training sessions, raising hopes for his return in the second Test at the Gabba. Starc joked about Cummins’ rapid recovery, saying, “Probably understand why he doesn’t train much, because when he does, he makes us all look silly.”

Australia’s training session on Wednesday was interrupted for nearly 30 minutes due to nearby lightning, which temporarily halted outdoor activities. Players were directed back indoors while the threat persisted. After about 40 minutes of fielding drills, the team was able to resume their practice once the lightning danger had passed.

In addition to the pace bowling situation, the batting lineup is also in flux. Usman Khawaja is expected to be joined by a new opening partner as Marnus Labuschagne returns to the squad. Labuschagne’s potential role as an opener or in his preferred No. 3 position is still under consideration.

As Australia prepares for the Ashes series, the team’s depth and resilience will be put to the test against a formidable England side. With Starc at the helm, the bowlers are eager to make their mark in what promises to be a thrilling contest.
