PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Steelers secured the AFC North title following a dramatic finish against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday night. A last-second field goal attempt by Ravens kicker Tyler Loop sailed wide, allowing the Steelers to clinch their 25th division championship, their first since 2020.
The victory sets the stage for the Steelers to host the Houston Texans in the wild card round of the playoffs on “Monday Night Football,” scheduled for March 15, 2024, at 20:20 (local time) on ESPN.
In what was a closely contested match, the Steelers initially faced setbacks after losing to the Cleveland Browns the previous week, which intensified the stakes for this showdown. With just 3:49 left in the game, the Steelers regained the lead at 20-17, but not without some drama. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers had to use his final timeout due to communication issues with his helmet. After switching helmets, he called the timeout before the third-down play, visibly frustrated.
The Steelers capitalized on this momentum with a rushing touchdown from running back Kenneth Gainwell shortly thereafter. Despite a strong defensive effort that limited Ravens star running back Derrick Henry to just 79 yards in the first quarter, the Steelers’ defense struggled in the fourth quarter, allowing two significant passing touchdowns that brought the Ravens back into contention.
In a rare misstep, kicker Chris Boswell missed his first extra point in nearly two seasons after Rodgers connected with Calvin Austin III for a touchdown with less than a minute remaining. This miss opened the door for the Ravens to potentially steal the game with a late field goal, but Loop’s attempt fell short, sealing the Steelers’ victory.
The Steelers’ triumph serves as a testament to their resilience and determination, showcasing their ability to overcome adversity on their path to the playoffs. As they prepare for the Texans, fans and players alike are hopeful for a deep playoff run.
