World No.6 Taylor Fritz experienced a significant setback ahead of the Australian Open after suffering a surprising three-set loss to Argentinian player Sebastian Baez at the United Cup. The match, held on January 6, 2024, in Perth, highlighted Fritz’s ongoing struggles with knee tendonitis, raising concerns about his performance in the upcoming Grand Slam tournament.
Fritz started strong, taking the first set and leading 2-0 in the second. However, Baez, ranked at No.45, showcased his resilience and fighting spirit, ultimately turning the match around. Baez secured a hard-fought victory with scores of 4-6, 7-5, and 6-4, concluding the match in two hours and 33 minutes. Following his defeat, Fritz’s frustration became evident when he snapped his racquet over his thigh. Afterward, he graciously handed the broken racquet to a young fan in the crowd.
The match’s outcome was particularly disappointing for Fritz, who had been vocal about his struggles with “pretty serious tendonitis” leading into the United Cup. In his post-match comments, he acknowledged the ongoing challenge of managing his knee pain while trying to increase his match play. “I spent the majority – pretty much the entirety – of the off season trying to rehab my knee tendinopathy,” he explained. “That’s a thing that takes months and months to get better.”
Fritz indicated that if his condition does not improve, he might have to take a break from competition. He said, “I’m going to try to play through and keep doing the rehab while travelling. But if that doesn’t work in a couple of months, then I am going to just have to full stop and fix it.”
In contrast, the news was much brighter for Coco Gauff, the world No.3. Gauff delivered an impressive performance, defeating Solana Sierra with a commanding score of 6-1, 6-1. Her victory ensured that the tie would proceed to a mixed doubles match, keeping the United States in contention.
Gauff expressed her happiness after the match, stating, “I’m really happy. There was a little bit of pressure. I feel like I can play even better too, which is even more exciting.” Her quick win over Sierra lasted just 57 minutes and showcased her dominant form.
As the United Cup progresses, all eyes will be on the upcoming mixed doubles match, which will determine the outcome of the tie. While Fritz’s injury looms large, Gauff’s stellar performance provides a glimmer of hope for the American team as they strive to advance in the competition.
