Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa expressed concern over the team’s performance and attendance at player-led meetings following a narrow 29-27 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on March 15, 2024. The Dolphins are struggling with a disappointing 1-5 start to the season, having lost four games in which they were within one score in the final two minutes.
In a post-game interview, Tagovailoa highlighted the need for improvement in several “little things,” including attendance at crucial meetings. The Dolphins had only a 6% chance of winning entering the fourth quarter, as they trailed by ten points. Despite a late surge that saw Miami take a one-point lead, the Chargers secured the victory with a game-winning field goal after a swift drive.
Tagovailoa, who accounted for three turnovers including a critical interception, acknowledged his role in the loss and pointed to the necessity of addressing attendance issues at player-led meetings. “We have guys showing up to player-only meetings late, guys not showing up at all,” he stated. “There’s a lot that goes into that. Do we have to make this mandatory? It’s a lot of things we’ve got to get cleaned up.”
Coach Mike McDaniel remarked that player-led meetings are outside his direct control but emphasized the importance of accountability among the players. He noted, “We’ve been very accountable to me. It sounds like there was something on his mind regarding the specific meetings with a couple of individuals.”
While addressing the team’s struggles, McDaniel mentioned the need for collective effort in solving late-game issues. The Dolphins have experienced four losses this season where they failed to secure victory in the final moments, a trend that has raised concerns about their resilience.
Last season, tardiness and absences at meetings were prevalent, with McDaniel often resorting to fines without achieving lasting change. A source familiar with the team dynamics indicated that punctuality issues were overlooked during winning periods but have become more pronounced amid the current struggles. Notable players, including Jalen Ramsey and Tyreek Hill, have been cited as frequent offenders in this regard.
As Miami prepares for their upcoming game against the Cleveland Browns, Tagovailoa remains focused on addressing the team’s issues. “We’ve got to look at the film again, see where we can go,” he said. “You can’t do that and expect to win games.”
McDaniel acknowledged the difficulty of losing games in the closing minutes but praised his team’s effort to fight back during the game. “They fought back, and I was proud of that,” he stated, while also making it clear that moral victories are not a consideration at this level. He reiterated the importance of delivering peak performance during critical moments as they continue to work on their collective shortcomings.
The Dolphins now face the challenge of turning their season around, with leadership and accountability at the forefront of their strategy. As the team navigates these internal issues, the focus will be on whether they can translate discussions into action on the field.
