Twilight Women’s Social Smash Cricket Event Draws Enthusiastic Crowd

The inaugural Twilight Women’s Social Smash cricket event took place at Donnelly Fields in Gunnedah on March 15, 2024, drawing a vibrant crowd eager for camaraderie and competition. The evening featured two exciting matches beginning at 19:00, with the Mooki Maidens facing off against the Gwydir Girls while the Namoi Ninjas competed against Peel Power.

The results of the matches were secondary to the atmosphere of fun and community. The Mooki Maidens secured a narrow victory with a total of 80 runs, edging out the Gwydir Girls, who scored 76 runs. Meanwhile, the Namoi Ninjas triumphed with 114 runs against Peel Power, who managed 101 runs. Notable performances included Zoe Fleming of the Namoi Ninjas, who contributed significantly with 28 runs and two direct-hit run-outs.

The format of the matches encouraged participation and lighthearted competition. Each team consisted of players batting in pairs, with each duo facing three overs. Teams faced a penalty of five runs deducted for every wicket lost. The matches adhered to traditional six-ball overs, allowing players to showcase their skills in a friendly environment.

The event attracted a mix of participants, including seasoned local cricketers and those returning to the sport after a long break. For some players, it was their first experience beyond casual backyard cricket. Leslee Finnerty, a representative player in indoor cricket, adapted well to the outdoor setting and impressed the crowd by clearing the boundary with a powerful shot.

Families also took part in the event, with many mothers playing alongside their daughters. The Gwydir Girls featured a family affair, including Kate Knight and her daughters Heidi Knight and Sally Keeler, along with niece Kirra Natty and granddaughters Mackenzie and Charlette Keeler.

The atmosphere at Donnelly Fields was lively, filled with laughter and encouragement as players embraced the spirit of the game. The focus remained on enjoyment rather than competition, fostering a sense of community among participants and spectators alike.

Round two of the Twilight Women’s Social Smash is scheduled for the following Friday at the same venue, promising more excitement and opportunities for women to engage in cricket.

This initiative not only showcases the growing popularity of women’s cricket but also highlights the importance of community involvement in sports. The success of this event reflects a positive trend towards inclusivity and participation in recreational activities, paving the way for future events in the region.
