Point Cook celebrated a historic achievement on March 15, 2024, as the Warriors clinched the Victorian Turf Cricket Association (VTCA) Group B T20 title. In a tense showdown against Glenroy, the Warriors demonstrated resilience and skill, securing the championship for the first time since the club’s inception in 2006.
Warriors captain-coach Shafraz Mohamed expressed immense pride in the team’s performance, highlighting the significance of this victory. “This one means a lot and more than the others,” he stated, noting that this marked his seventh T20 grand final and second championship win. His leadership was pivotal, especially considering the team had five players under 20 years old at the start of the season.
The Warriors faced early challenges during the match, losing three wickets in quick succession after choosing to bat first. However, the middle order steadied the innings, allowing the team to post a total of 7-144. Chathura Demuni emerged as the top scorer with 36 runs, while the contributions from Nivain Gamanayake and Kavin Kumar towards the end of the innings proved crucial in setting a defendable target.
Despite a strong start from Glenroy, the Warriors’ bowlers quickly gained the upper hand. Mohamed emphasized the importance of remaining calm during the match. “Once the spinners came on, it changed,” he explained. “We knew we had enough spinners to make it hard to get away.” The Warriors maintained their composure and executed their game plan effectively, conceding just one boundary after the fifth over. Glenroy concluded their innings at 6-109, with Vishay Ramchander taking two wickets for the Warriors.
This championship holds significant meaning for the entire club. Mohamed remarked, “There’s massive potential with the kids, and regardless of what division you play in, they are hard to win.” He underscored the importance of developing young talent to ensure future success at the club. “The only way you’re going to keep them is if the first XI is successful.”
Looking ahead, the Warriors are now focused on the upcoming Roy Picone Shield season. Currently sitting in second place, they are preparing for their final round match against the Greenvale Kangaroos. “We have the right mix,” Mohamed said. He acknowledged that while the young players are still learning, they are doing so quickly. “It’s a two-year process and this is year one,” he added. Securing a home final is crucial, and the team needs to win their next game to solidify their position.
As the Warriors bask in the glow of their T20 triumph, they remain committed to building on this success as they continue their journey in the Roy Picone Shield.
