West Indies Defeat Italy to Remain Undefeated at T20 World Cup

The West Indies maintained their perfect record at the 2024 T20 World Cup by defeating Italy at Eden Gardens on Thursday. The match showcased a challenging batting performance from both teams, with the West Indies managing to score 165 runs before Italy struggled to respond, ultimately falling short.

West Indies captain Shai Hope emerged as the standout player of the match, scoring 75 runs off 46 balls. This marked his second consecutive half-century in the tournament. His efforts were vital in keeping the West Indies innings afloat, as the next highest score came from Italy’s Ben Manenti, who managed only 26 runs.

Italy’s captain, Harry Manenti, reflected on the match, stating, “We haven’t played the perfect game despite showing promise in moments.” He underscored the importance of financial support for associate nations, emphasizing the need for more competitive opportunities. “If we keep getting support from the ICC, if we get more cricket, we’ll get more competitive,” he noted. Manenti acknowledged that the lack of games has hindered Italy’s progress, adding, “The more we play, the higher our chances to close out games like this.”

The West Indies innings, while below par, was anchored by Hope’s aggressive batting. He struck four sixes and six boundaries before being dismissed by Crishan Kalugamage in the 16th over. Italy’s response was hampered by early wickets, losing three in the powerplay, primarily due to the efforts of medium-pacer Matthew Forde. Pacer Shamar Joseph further restricted the Italian batting line-up, taking 4 wickets for 30 runs and also contributing significantly in the field with four catches.

In the upcoming Super Eights, the West Indies will face formidable opponents including 2024 champions India, 2024 runners-up South Africa, and Zimbabwe, who recently eliminated Australia. Hope expressed confidence in his team’s ability to perform under pressure, stating, “We’ll have to find ways to be more forceful when the crunch time comes.” He emphasized the need for smart batting and clinical stroke play, asserting that the team is in good shape heading into the next phase of the tournament.

As the T20 World Cup progresses, the West Indies will aim to build on their strong start, while Italy seeks to learn from this experience and improve their competitiveness in future matches.
