The Wigan Warriors showcased a commanding performance in their season-opening match, defeating the Castleford Tigers with a final score of 32-14 on March 9, 2024. The Warriors secured their victory with a series of impressive tries, putting them firmly in control of the game.
Wigan’s early struggles were evident when Castleford’s Liam Hood opened the scoring just ten minutes into the match. This gave the Tigers a 6-0 lead, a position they maintained until the 34th minute. Wigan’s Marshall ignited their comeback with the first of five tries, followed closely by Bevan French, who completed a well-executed move, ensuring the Warriors led 10-6 at halftime.
The second half saw Wigan build on their momentum. Just three minutes in, Eckersley scored to widen the gap, and he further solidified their advantage with another try in the 62nd minute. Adding to the scoreline, Jake Wardle crossed the line shortly thereafter. Despite a strong finish from Castleford, which included late tries from Mikaele Ravalawa and George Lawler, the Tigers were unable to close the gap, leaving them with too much to do in the final moments of the match.
Wigan’s head coach, Matt Peet, praised his team’s defensive efforts, stating, “For large parts defensively, I thought we were very good against a team who certainly asked questions.” He noted the team’s potential for improvement, emphasizing their ability to execute plays effectively.
In contrast, Castleford’s head coach, Ryan Carr, expressed frustration over his team’s performance. Speaking to BBC Radio Leeds, he remarked, “If we didn’t make the game of footy so hard on ourselves, the scoreline would have been much closer coming into the last 20.” Carr acknowledged Wigan’s experience and cohesion, admitting that they were well-prepared for the contest.
As the season progresses, both teams will look to refine their strategies. Wigan aims to build on this strong start, while Castleford seeks to regroup and enhance their game management in future matches. The Warriors’ victory sets a positive tone for their campaign, suggesting they will be a formidable contender in the league this season.
