China is set to ban yoke-style steering wheels from January 1, 2027, as part of a broader initiative aimed at enhancing vehicle safety. This decision follows a draft regulation from the country’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), which outlines updated standards for steering wheel design and safety testing. Yoke-style wheels, popularized by models such as the Lexus RZ and Tesla Model S, have raised safety concerns due to their unconventional design.
The proposed regulation is currently in the “draft for approval” stage, indicating it is close to finalization. Once formalized, the new rules will eliminate technical specifications related to yoke-style steering wheels and will mandate human impact testing for all steering wheel types. This change reflects a growing focus on improving safety standards within the automotive industry.
Previously, the draft included references to yoke-style wheels, but these were removed in the final version. The updated regulation requires head impact testing at ten critical points on the steering wheel rim. Notably, yoke-style wheels lack the “mid-point of the weakest area” and the “mid-point of the shortest unsupported area,” which are essential for effective testing.
According to Autohome, a Chinese automotive website that reported on the draft, a study cited in the regulation emphasizes the risks associated with yoke-style wheels. It highlights that traditional circular steering wheels offer a broader area for cushioning when a driver leans forward. In contrast, the open structure of a yoke-style steering wheel significantly increases the likelihood of a driver sustaining injuries during a secondary collision by allowing direct impact with the steering column or dashboard.
In addition to the ban on yoke-style wheels, the updated regulation introduces a new rule prohibiting hard projectiles, such as metal or plastic components, from facing occupants during airbag deployment. This requirement poses significant challenges for yoke-style wheels, which have irregular supporting structures and unpredictable fracture patterns.
The revised standards are designed to align China’s regulations with international safety benchmarks. They incorporate stricter thresholds for upward and rearward displacement of the steering column during accidents and introduce a revised testing methodology.
Once approved, the new steering wheel regulations will apply to new vehicle models, while existing models will typically have a grace period of up to 13 months to comply with the new standards. This transition period allows manufacturers to adjust their designs to meet the updated safety requirements.
As China continues to refine its automotive safety standards, the ban on yoke-style steering wheels reflects a commitment to prioritizing driver and passenger safety in an evolving industry.
