Nissan Unveils Facelifted Ariya Ahead of Tokyo Motor Show

Nissan has officially unveiled the facelifted version of the Ariya electric vehicle ahead of its debut at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show, scheduled for the end of the month. This updated model comes just months after its introduction to the Australian market, marking a significant development for the brand.

Originally revealed in 2020, the Ariya was expected to launch globally in 2021 but faced delays, with many factors contributing to its staggered release, including compliance with local design regulations and supply chain challenges. Although the facelifted Ariya will be available in Japanese showrooms by the end of March 2026, the timeline for its release in Australia remains uncertain. Notably, the updated model will not be offered in the United States, where Nissan has opted to focus on the more affordable Leaf instead.

Design Changes and Features

The revised Ariya showcases a fresh front fascia that replaces the existing model’s large gloss black faux grille with a smaller, sleeker black strip connecting the headlight clusters. The updated design includes new spear-like driving lights that extend from the outer edges of the headlights, offering a look reminiscent of the third-generation Leaf, although the driving lights do not incorporate the Leaf’s design elements.

On the sides, new alloy wheel designs feature polished ribs along the five thick spokes, enhancing the vehicle’s overall aesthetic. While details regarding rear changes remain limited, it appears that the wrap-around tail-light housing will largely retain its current design, suggesting that the Ariya will not adopt the Leaf’s Z-inspired lighting treatment.

The facelifted Ariya will also introduce a new infotainment system that runs on the Android Automotive operating system. Additionally, it will feature vehicle-to-load functionality, enabling drivers to power appliances directly from the vehicle. Japanese models will benefit from a revised suspension setup designed to provide a more compliant ride, enhancing comfort during travel.

Performance Specifications

Currently, the local versions of the Ariya are available with two drivetrain options. The front-wheel drive model is equipped with a 160kW motor paired with a 63kWh battery, while a second option features a more powerful 178kW motor linked to an 87kWh battery. The top-tier variants include a dual-motor all-wheel drive setup, with a 160kW motor on each axle, also connected to the 87kWh battery.

As of now, there has been no official announcement regarding any changes to the Ariya’s existing drivetrain or battery offerings. The anticipated enhancements in design and technology aim to position the Ariya competitively within the growing electric vehicle market.

This facelifted version of the Ariya marks an important step for Nissan as it seeks to enhance its electric vehicle lineup and meet evolving consumer demands. With the Tokyo Motor Show fast approaching, further details are expected to be unveiled that will shed light on the vehicle’s full capabilities and features.
