UPDATE: A 24-year-old driver has been arrested by NSW Police after allegedly engaging in reckless drink-driving behavior twice within a span of just two hours in East Maitland.
The alarming series of events unfolded early Saturday morning, around 12:30 AM, when police patrolling the New England Highway observed a ute being driven dangerously. Officers pulled over the vehicle and conducted a roadside breath test, which the driver failed, returning a blood alcohol level of 0.166. His license was suspended on the spot, and he received a court attendance notice for high-range drink-driving charges.
What happened next is shocking. Just before 2:00 AM, less than two hours after his initial arrest, police spotted the same ute again on the highway. This time, the driver allegedly failed to stop, prompting a police pursuit. Authorities deployed road spikes, successfully bringing the vehicle to a halt.
Upon arrest, the driver provided a second breath analysis, revealing a blood alcohol level of 0.130. NSW Police have charged him not only with drink-driving but also with the serious offenses of police pursuit, failure to stop, and driving while his license was suspended.
He was subsequently refused bail and is set to appear in court later today. This alarming incident raises serious concerns about road safety and the consequences of impaired driving, as authorities continue to crack down on such dangerous behavior.
