UPDATE: Armidale is calling all nature enthusiasts! New reports confirm that the city is home to stunning walking trails that are easily accessible for everyone looking to connect with nature without straying far from home.
Among these, the 3.9 km Yellow and Green track loop in the state forest has just been ranked as the top trail by users on Alltrails.com. Located conveniently off Armidale Forest Road, this trail offers a pleasant stroll that can be completed in about one to one-and-a-half hours. It’s also dog-friendly, making it a perfect family outing. Users caution that the path may become muddy after rain, particularly during the region’s summer storms.
Just 10 minutes from the city center, the Dumaresq Dam features a 2.5 km loop that offers breathtaking views and various activities. Visitors can enjoy public barbecues, fishing, kayaking, and a playground for kids, all while taking in the picturesque scenery. Kayak launching is available, but note that petrol boats are prohibited.
For those interested in Armidale’s rich history, a self-guided heritage walk is available, showcasing the city’s architectural marvels, including two cathedrals over a century old. The 1.6 km walk highlights the early settlers’ lofty aspirations. Visitors can collect a copy from the Armidale Visitor Information Centre, which is open seven days a week, or download the guide via the Cya On the Road app. However, those with mobility issues should be aware of the significant elevation changes along the route.
If you’re looking to stay within city limits, the creek cycleway spans almost 6 km from the University to the eastern fringes of Armidale. This paved path meanders alongside Dumaresq Creek, offering a mix of rural and urban scenery. Keep in mind that this path does not loop, so a round trip will cover nearly 12 km.
For a more adventurous day trip, don’t miss the spectacular Dangars Falls and Wollomombi Falls trails. Located in the breathtaking New England area, these trails provide access to stunning waterfalls and picnic areas. Wollomombi Falls are less than 1 km south of the village, with convenient parking available.
As Armidale continues to promote its natural beauty and historical significance, now is the time to explore these trails and embrace the great outdoors. Grab your family, friends, or pets, and make the most of what this vibrant city has to offer!
