URGENT UPDATE: The Army 4 Brigade has initiated a significant urban combat training operation in the heart of Bendigo, Victoria, prompting local authorities to issue a warning to residents. From October 20 to 25, 2023, military personnel will be actively training on public roads and within local properties.
Officials stress that while the soldiers will be armed, they will be using blank ammunition only, which simulates the sound of gunfire but poses no real threat. Local residents may experience the noise of these training activities and are advised to stay calm and informed.
Brigadier Michelle McCormack, commander of the 4th Brigade, confirmed that this exercise, dubbed Exercise ARRAS WALK, is designed to enhance soldiers’ urban combat skills. She stated, “Exercising within communities provides increased realism in training, and gives our soldiers the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the types of environments they might operate in.”
This exercise is part of routine professional development for troops, many of whom are local to the region or have previously assisted the community during emergencies like floods and bushfires.
Residents are advised that military vehicles will be operating around the city and that soldiers will be moving in uniforms. There will be controlled shooting of blank ammunition in specific locations predetermined in consultation with Victoria Police and the City of Greater Bendigo.
Brigadier McCormack emphasized the importance of community cooperation, saying, “This exercise would not be possible without the warm hospitality and support afforded to soldiers and officers by the Bendigo community.”
Authorities have implemented clear safety measures to ensure public safety during this training period. They stress that the military’s presence is strictly for training purposes and not a cause for panic.
Residents are encouraged to share this information widely to help alleviate any concerns and ensure public awareness as the operation unfolds. As the week progresses, updates will be provided regarding specific training activities and their impact on daily life in Bendigo.
Stay tuned for more updates as this situation develops.
