Artist Nina Sanadze Unveils Urgent Exhibition Amid Crisis

UPDATE: Artist Nina Sanadze has launched her powerful exhibition, Collapsed Utopias – Works Interrupted, at Goldstone Gallery, running from July 31 to August 28, 2023. This thought-provoking showcase features 22 sculptures that reflect the turmoil faced by Jewish artists in the wake of recent violence, particularly following the tragic events of October 7, 2023.

Sanadze’s exhibition aims to create a “meditative and deeply immersive” experience, drawing inspiration from the archive of Valentin Toporidze, a monumental sculptor from Soviet Georgia. The sculptures, some in various sizes, are strategically arranged across two galleries, inviting visitors on a journey of discovery. “Experiencing this exhibition is, I hope, like a journey of discovery — assembling fragments of memory, emotion, and meaning as you move through the space,” Sanadze stated.

The urgency of this exhibition is underscored by its context. The sculptures signify the abrupt interruption of artistic expression, mirroring the feelings of betrayal and abandonment experienced by Jewish artists due to the recent conflict. Sanadze has faced personal attacks, including being doxxed and forced out of her studio after publicly condemning the Hamas-led massacre. This exhibition serves as a reclaiming of her voice and a refuge for Jewish creatives.

“Collapsed Utopias – Works Interrupted” encapsulates the raw wounds left open by historical violence, showcasing how the Jewish artistic world has been forcibly halted. Sanadze explains that many of the sculptures are reimagined or reconstructed replicas of Toporidze’s original works, now contextualized within a contemporary Australian setting. “What do these forms mean now, in today’s history and landscape?” she asks, challenging audiences to reflect on the significance of these pieces.

The exhibition is described as a blend of “document and defiance,” with Sanadze aiming to create an encounter with the past that prompts deep introspection. “The experience is intended to feel like an encounter with a ghost of the past — a presence that asks: Why am I here? What am I trying to tell you?” she elaborates.

Sanadze’s work resonates with the viewer, transforming their perception of the present and future. “Once you’ve seen it, once it has touched you, you can’t unsee it. It becomes part of your landscape,” she adds, emphasizing the emotional impact of her art.

This exhibition is not just a display of sculptures; it is a vital commentary on the state of art and identity today. Collapsed Utopias – Works Interrupted is an urgent call to acknowledge and reflect on the ongoing struggles faced by artists and communities impacted by violent upheaval.
