Australia Appoints Greg Moriarty as New US Ambassador

The Albanese Government has announced the nomination of Greg Moriarty AO as Australia’s new Ambassador to the United States. This decision, made public on January 25, 2024, underscores Australia’s commitment to strengthening its alliance with the US, particularly during a time of global uncertainty.

Extensive Experience in International Relations

Mr. Moriarty brings a wealth of experience to the role, having held senior positions within the Australian Public Service, most notably as the Secretary of the Department of Defence since 2017. His tenure has been marked by significant developments, including an increase in the defence budget under the Albanese Government and the implementation of the National Defence Strategy in response to the Defence Strategic Review.

His diplomatic career includes substantial overseas experience. Mr. Moriarty served at the Headquarters of the United States Central Command during critical military operations in the Persian Gulf, including Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Additionally, he was the Ambassador to Indonesia from 2010 to 2014 and held the same position in Iran from 2005 to 2008.

Earlier in his career, he served in Papua New Guinea and took on the role of Senior Negotiator for the Peace Monitoring Group on Bougainville. In 2015, he was appointed as Australia’s inaugural Counter Terrorism Coordinator within the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, demonstrating his capability in addressing complex security challenges.

Focus on Strengthening Alliances

During his time at the Department of Defence, Mr. Moriarty has played a pivotal role in developing Australia’s defence partnerships, particularly through the AUKUS agreement with the United States and the United Kingdom. This trilateral security pact aims to enhance cooperation in defence technology and capabilities, reflecting a shared commitment to regional stability.

Mr. Moriarty’s extensive background in international policy positions him well to advance the Australia-US alliance, which has been critical for both countries amid shifting geopolitical landscapes. His appointment comes as the Australian government continues to navigate complex global challenges.

In light of this transition, the Albanese Government has expressed gratitude for the service of the outgoing Ambassador, Hon Dr. Kevin Rudd AC, acknowledging his contributions to strengthening bilateral relations during his tenure.

As Mr. Moriarty prepares to assume his new role, stakeholders from various sectors are keenly observing how his leadership will shape future engagements between Australia and the United States.
