Australian punter Michael Dickson has clinched a spot in the Super Bowl following a pivotal role in the Seattle Seahawks‘ victory over the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Championship on January 28, 2024. The Seahawks triumphed with a score of 31-27, propelling Dickson to the NFL’s premier event at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, on February 8, 2024.
In a contrasting turn of events, fellow Australian punter Jeremy Crawshaw saw his Super Bowl aspirations dashed as the Denver Broncos fell short against the New England Patriots, losing 10-7 in the AFC Championship. This defeat marks the end of a promising season for Crawshaw, who had been a standout player for the Broncos.
Dickson’s performance was crucial in the NFC Championship, where he delivered a significant 55-yard punt that led to a turnover and a subsequent touchdown for the Seahawks. With the Seahawks leading 17-13 in the third quarter, Dickson’s boot created a pivotal moment in the game, allowing his team to extend their lead. Over the course of the match, he punted five times for a total of 226 yards, showcasing his vital role in the team’s success.
In the AFC Championship game, the Broncos and Patriots were locked in a tight contest, tied at 7-7 at halftime. However, a sudden snowstorm disrupted play, making conditions challenging for both teams. The only score of the second half came from the Patriots’ kicker, Andres Borregales, who successfully converted a 23-yard field goal with just over five minutes left in the third quarter, sealing the victory for New England.
Despite the loss, Crawshaw’s performance was commendable. The 24-year-old, originally from Penrith, had an impressive season, earning a place in the All-Rookie Team selected by the Pro Football Writers of America. In the championship game, he delivered six punts for a total of 309 yards, including a personal best of 60 yards. Unfortunately, the Broncos struggled offensively without their injured star quarterback Bo Nix, which hampered their ability to respond effectively in the second half.
The Patriots’ win marks a significant achievement, as they become only the third team in Super Bowl history to secure a conference championship with a score of 10 points or less. Quarterback Drake Maye played a vital role for New England, rushing for 68 yards and throwing for 86 yards, while scoring the team’s only touchdown. Following the game, Maye expressed his gratitude for his teammates, stating, “I’m just proud of this team. Don’t have many words, just thankful for this team; love each and every one of them. It took everybody.”
As the Super Bowl approaches, Dickson hopes to join Jordan Mailata as one of the few Australians to achieve victory in the NFL’s biggest game. Mailata secured a coveted Super Bowl ring with the Philadelphia Eagles last season, while another Australian, Jesse Williams, also holds a ring from the Seahawks’ 2014 triumph, although he did not play that season due to injury.
The upcoming Super Bowl promises to be an exciting showcase of talent, with Dickson aiming to make his mark in a game that has captured the attention of football fans around the world.
