Australians Strongly Favor Japan Ties, Survey Reveals Urgent Trust

ASEAN - Australian PM Anthony Albanese attends summits in Laos working to deliver jobs and opportunities in Australia, and to promote security in our region.

New survey results confirm that an overwhelming 79 percent of Australians strongly back the nation’s relationship with Japan, citing “very high” levels of trust between the countries. The survey, conducted by communications firm SEC Newgate, reveals that a significant majority of Australians recognize the importance of Japan for the country’s future.

The survey of 1,200 Australians was commissioned to provide critical insights for delegates attending the 62nd annual Australia Japan Business Cooperation Committee conference in Perth, running from October 15 to 17, 2023. Nearly 60 percent of respondents expressed positive feelings about Japanese companies investing in Australia, while 48 percent believe such investments serve Australia’s national interest.

Respondents highlighted new technologies and innovation as key motivations for supporting Japanese investment, with over 40 percent citing these factors as reasons for their optimism. “The levels of trust are very high,” stated Brian Tyson, SEC Newgate Australia chair. He emphasized that survey participants provided unprompted insights, underscoring Japan’s cultural and political alignment with Australia, its democratic values, and respect for shared ideals.

Participants described Japan as a “dependable and trustworthy partner,” noting its long history of fair dealings and the provision of high-quality products and technology. This week’s conference will gather 350 senior business and government delegates from Japan alongside more than 300 delegates from Australia, marking a significant opportunity for collaboration.

Tyson further elaborated, stating, “The West Australian Government has been hugely successful in attracting Japanese investment into the State. Premier Cook was in Japan this month, emphasizing the critical importance of Japanese investment, technology, and the demand for energy and raw materials to the West Australian economy.”

As the conference unfolds, all eyes will be on the discussions that aim to bolster economic ties and mutual cooperation. The strong public sentiment revealed in the survey suggests that Australians are increasingly aware of the strategic benefits of a robust partnership with Japan, making this event particularly timely and relevant.

Stay tuned as developments continue to emerge from this pivotal gathering in Perth, where business and government leaders will explore new opportunities to strengthen the Australia-Japan relationship.
