Australia’s Mining Group Urges Urgent Approval Deal by Christmas

Tania Constable

URGENT UPDATE: Australia’s largest mining organization, the Minerals Council of Australia, is calling for an immediate agreement on new environmental approval laws before Christmas 2023. The push comes as the Federal Labor government faces a critical deadline to overhaul the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act.

Late last month, a bill aimed at streamlining environmental approvals was introduced in Parliament, but it requires either Opposition or crossbench support in the Senate to move forward. Tania Constable, the council’s chief executive, emphasized that adjustments to Labor’s proposal are essential to secure backing from major mining players like BHP, Rio Tinto, and Glencore.

In comments to The Australian, Constable stated, “There’s got to be a balance between protecting the environment, building public trust, and actually getting projects up and running in Australia.” She highlighted the industry’s commitment to climate goals as non-negotiable, affirming, “We are bringing down emissions across the industry.”

The urgency for this legislative change is palpable as Constable anticipates that, with industry support, the bill could pass by the end of the year. She urged the government to prioritize negotiations with the Coalition instead of seeking compromise with the Greens, who may complicate the approval process.

Western Australia’s Premier, Roger Cook, voiced optimism regarding the reforms, stating that concerns about project delays can be managed effectively. “I think the time is now to strike the balance, and to get this legislation through,” he said on Wednesday.

The outcome of this legislative battle is critical, as it will directly impact Australia’s mining sector and its ability to operate efficiently while addressing environmental concerns. As the deadline approaches, all eyes will be on Parliament to see if a deal can be struck in the coming weeks.

Stay tuned for further developments as the situation evolves. This story is shaping the future of Australia’s resource management and environmental policy.
