With just two rounds remaining, the Lions are building vital momentum and confidence, as they eye a deep playoff run.
Coach Monique Caparello expressed optimism following a series of strong performances, stating, “We are definitely finding some form. We’ve got some momentum going for us.” The Lions are honing their skills and focusing on teamwork, with players now fully aware of their roles on the court.
A significant victory against the Melton Thoroughbreds solidified their status as contenders. The Thoroughbreds, who previously defeated the Lions, were outmatched in their latest encounter, allowing Bacchus Marsh to gain crucial ground in the standings. Caparello noted, “We played exceptionally in that game and it brought the group even closer.”
In their latest matchup on July 15, 2023, the Lions faced the Mildura Heat and emerged victorious with a commanding score of 76-60. Taking control early, the Lions led every quarter. Caparello acknowledged that while they didn’t perform at their peak, the team is gearing up for the finals. “We’re trying to find form for finals and hopefully we will go deep,” she said.
Star player Olivia Ogston shone brightly, leading the team with 22 points. Her consistent scoring, with double figures in every game since round two, has been pivotal for the Lions. Caparello praised Ogston for her energy and defensive prowess, stating, “She is doing a really good job on the offensive end.”
As the Lions prepare for their next challenge against the Castlemaine Cannons on Saturday, maintaining focus remains crucial. Caparello emphasized, “We want to build form heading into finals.”
In other league action, the Thoroughbreds secured a dominant 86-51 win over the Heat, with Ella Price leading the scoring with 20 points. The Thoroughbreds currently sit in second place with just one loss this season, showcasing their own playoff potential.
In the men’s league, the Thoroughbreds also triumphed, defeating the Heat 93-79, with standout performance from Aduto Chipuowuop scoring 24 points. Meanwhile, the Lions faced a setback against the Bendigo Braves, losing 84-72, despite a strong effort from Seth Wall, who contributed 15 points.
