Badgers Force Urgent Demolition of Historic Pavilion in Kidderminster

URGENT UPDATE: The historic Sons of Rest Pavilion, built in 1938 in Brinton Park, Kidderminster, is set to be demolished due to severe damage caused by local badgers. The burrowing animals have been successfully rehomed in a new artificial sett within the park, paving the way for an exciting redevelopment.

Construction crews are now gearing up for the demolition as part of a comprehensive £3 million improvement programme that promises to transform the park into a vibrant community space. The new pavilion will include a café and an outdoor terrace, making it a hub for residents and visitors.

The Wyre Forest District Council has enlisted the services of McPhillips (Wellington) Ltd to oversee this ambitious project. Notably, £2.4 million of the funding is being provided by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, highlighting the significance of this initiative for the community.

In an official statement, Councillor Tracey Onslow, cabinet member for culture, leisure, arts, and community safety, emphasized the positive impact of these changes: “Over the next 12 months, the park will see significant visual and practical improvements. The Sons of Rest project is now in progress, as is the digging out of the new ornamental pool, which will be located where the original paddling pool was.”

The renovation will also feature a refurbishment of the existing toilet block, enhancements to footpaths, and a new planting and landscaping scheme to invigorate the park’s flora and fauna. These improvements are expected to boost community engagement and increase foot traffic to the park.

As work begins, residents can look forward to a revitalized Brinton Park that honors its history while embracing modern amenities. The community’s reaction remains overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing excitement for the upcoming changes and the restoration of the park’s charm.

Stay tuned for further updates as the demolition and redevelopment progress. This is a pivotal moment for Kidderminster, with the potential to reshape local community dynamics for years to come.
