BREAKING: Gus Romer, bassist for the acclaimed rock band Amyl and the Sniffers, has returned to Brunswick for a well-deserved break before their upcoming US-UK tour. After a monumental year, which included a Grammy nomination and four ARIA awards, Romer is taking time to recharge before hitting the road again in June 2025.
Just last year, Amyl and the Sniffers released their third album, the critically acclaimed ‘Cartoon Darkness’, and have since skyrocketed from Melbourne’s pub scene to major international festivals like Glastonbury and Coachella. Romer stated, “It’s kind of mind-boggling that people all over the world listen and connect with the music.”
The band is set to embark on a two-month tour beginning in Toronto and concluding in Barcelona, but for now, Romer is enjoying the tranquility of Brunswick, a neighborhood he chose for its relaxed atmosphere. “I’m a big creature of leisure,” he shared, emphasizing the importance of downtime amidst their rigorous touring schedule.
Brunswick is not only Romer’s sanctuary but also a vibrant hub of Australia’s music scene, where local bands perform in pubs along Sydney Road. “Nothing’s really quite like playing in Melbourne. It’s kind of the hometown, it’s always gonna be like a special thing,” he added.
In December 2024, the band faced a setback when their scheduled free show at Federation Square was abruptly canceled due to overcrowding concerns, making headlines as the first band to have their performance at the venue called off. In a gesture of gratitude to their fans, Amyl and the Sniffers put $35,000 behind the bar at seven inner-city venues that night.
As they prepare for their North American tour, which will feature support from Party Dozen, Amyl and the Sniffers are committed to uplifting local artists. Before resuming their tour, Romer is focused on enjoying his downtime, stating, “It’s all about just chilling, cruising around Brunswick.”
