UPDATE: Three popular beaches along the New South Wales coast have been evacuated and closed due to shark sightings this morning, disrupting Australia Day celebrations. Authorities confirmed that Dee Why Beach was shut down after a shark was observed by lifeguards at 09:23 AM today, January 26, 2026.
The NSW government’s SharkSmart app announced the closure on social media, stating, “Shark observed at Dee Why Beach. Water evacuated. Beach closed.” Shortly after, at 10:39 AM, a surf lifesaver reported a shark sighting at Blue Bay Beach, leading to immediate evacuation and closure of the area.
Additionally, Elizabeth Beach, located in the Booti Booti National Park at Pacific Palms, was closed at 11:05 AM following another shark sighting. Earlier this morning, both Palm Beach and Manly Beach were also closed due to similar sightings; however, those beaches have since reopened.
The series of shark sightings has raised significant concerns among beachgoers, with officials urging swimmers to heed warnings and stay out of the water until further notice. The presence of sharks near popular recreational areas highlights ongoing safety issues, especially on busy holiday weekends like Australia Day.
Authorities are actively monitoring the situation and will provide updates as they become available. Residents and visitors are advised to stay informed through official channels and remain cautious while enjoying the coast.
Stay tuned for more developments on this urgent situation as it unfolds.
