Bega Show Celebrates 150 Years: Residents Share Nostalgic Memories

UPDATE: As the historic 150th Bega Show approaches, residents are buzzing with nostalgia and excitement. Long-time locals share their cherished memories of this iconic agricultural event, which has evolved but never lost its magic.

Just announced, the Bega Show will open its gates on February 23, 2024, promising an unforgettable experience for attendees. Peter Rogers, a resident who reminisces about his childhood show days, recalls the thrill of skipping school to enjoy the festivities. “Mum and dad would say we don’t have to go to school today, and we’d come down the mountain and go to the show,” said Rogers, highlighting the tradition that has spanned generations.

In a heartwarming flashback, Nita Quinn shared a photo of her nine-year-old self from 1939, proudly holding a Kewpie doll. “One look at the old photo transported me back to the sights and sounds of my childhood,” she reflected. Quinn’s memories of the boxing tent and the excitement of sideshows reveal the enduring spirit of the Bega Show, a celebration deeply rooted in community.

Peter Ubrihien, another long-time attendee, spoke about the showground being part of his family legacy. “I remember coming to working bees here with my father at the poultry pavilion,” he recalled. Ubrihien’s family has been involved for decades, and this year, his daughter Chrissy will perform an original song during the opening ceremony, showcasing the next generation’s connection to this cherished event.

The Bega Show has not only been a place for entertainment but also a platform for local agriculture, showcasing everything from livestock to homemade goods. Exhibits and competitions have remained a staple over the years, continuing to draw families back to the showground year after year.

With the 150th anniversary rapidly approaching, excitement builds as the community prepares to celebrate a legacy that has shaped their lives. “It’s made me really proud,” Ubrihien said about his daughter’s performance. “She’s a wonderful kid and has loved music since she was big enough to talk.”

As the countdown to the event continues, residents and visitors alike are eager to relive the rich history of the Bega Show, ensuring that its legacy endures for generations to come.

Stay tuned for more updates as the excitement unfolds leading up to the Bega Show!
