UPDATE: Iconic boxing coach Tommy Ward has officially announced his retirement after nearly 40 years of shaping the lives of young boxers in Parkes, Australia. This pivotal decision, made public on 20 December 2023, marks the end of an era for the local boxing community and the countless youth who have trained under his guidance.
Tommy, now 69 years old, has dedicated the last 25 years to running the beloved Tommy’s Backyard Boxing Gym, a makeshift training facility that became a lifeline for many young people, especially those facing personal challenges. “I don’t want to see it end or close,” Tommy stated, emphasizing his hope for someone to continue the legacy he built from his home gym.
The gym, originally an outdoor setup equipped with garden hose rings and makeshift weights, transformed dramatically after a visit from Scott Cam and the Random Acts of Kindness team in April 2010. Their intervention led to the construction of a fully equipped indoor facility, enhancing the training experience for local youth.
Tommy’s impact extends far beyond the boxing ring. He has been a mentor, a father figure, and a source of stability for many teens who walked through his doors. “For most, it became a second home,” Tommy reflected on his gym, highlighting its role as a safe space for troubled youth. His coaching philosophy centers on building self-discipline and life skills, often leading to transformative journeys for his trainees.
One remarkable success story involves a young man who, after struggling with drug abuse, turned his life around under Tommy’s mentorship. Over 18 months, he won six out of seven fights and rebuilt his life, securing employment and fostering a relationship. “It really helped him a lot,” Tommy recounted, showcasing the profound impact he has had on many lives.
Several former trainees, now adults, expressed their gratitude for Tommy’s dedication. Joe Van Opynen, who started training at just 16, credited Tommy with providing a supportive environment that kept him out of trouble. “He never charged anything and supplied everything,” Joe said, underscoring the community spirit that Tommy fostered.
Tommy’s influence is evident in the tight-knit relationships formed among the boxers. Mike Thurtell, who began training at age 14, found camaraderie and a sense of belonging at the gym. “It got us off the streets and out of trouble,” he stated, reflecting on the positive experiences shared during weekend fight trips and training sessions.
As he steps back, the community has rallied to honor Tommy’s contributions. Fellow trainer Chris Hancock praised him during a recent celebration, stating, “Tommy doesn’t give himself time; it’s all about the kids.” The gratitude echoed through the room, as former trainees brought their children to meet the man who had once shaped their lives.
Currently, the Backyard Boxing Gym continues to operate, with 10 to 12 members training under the legacy of Tommy Ward. Five of these members are serious fighters, with recent bouts showcasing their skills. The gym’s spirit lives on, fueled by the values Tommy instilled over decades of dedication.
As Tommy retires, he leaves behind a profound legacy in the Central West boxing community, reminding everyone that the true essence of boxing is not just about titles but the lives changed through mentorship and support. His commitment to fostering a safe, encouraging environment will resonate for years to come.
The future of Tommy’s Backyard Boxing Gym remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: Tommy Ward’s influence will linger, inspiring the next generation of boxers in Parkes and beyond.
