UPDATE: The construction of the Bunbury breakwater is officially complete, marking a pivotal milestone in the $112 million redevelopment of Bunbury’s waterfront. The breakwater, stretching just shy of half a kilometer, utilized an impressive 290,000 tonnes of core rock and 65,000 tonnes of armor rock sourced from across Western Australia. This crucial infrastructure is set to transform the current marine space into a vibrant hub for fishing and recreational activities.
The completion of the breakwater signals the third stage in the ambitious waterfront transformation project. This initiative aims to enhance community access and commercial marine activity, with significant upgrades on the horizon. Among the plans is a new $4 million fishing facility, which is slated to begin construction soon, despite the upcoming January 1, 2026 implementation of new demersal fishing laws limiting recreational fishing and imposing a long-term ban on commercial activities.
Ports Minister Stephen Dawson emphasized the importance of this infrastructure, stating, “We’ve reached an exciting milestone with the structure of the breakwater and land reclamation now complete, creating a new footprint for the waterfront.” His comments highlight the breakwater’s role as a foundational element for both community and industrial uses in the area.
Acting South West Minister Reece Whitby also expressed enthusiasm about the project, noting, “Bunbury has long had an outstanding waterfront, and this project builds on that strength to enhance community use and create new opportunities.” He further explained that the completed structures will support the next phase of development, which has already seen remarkable transformations in the region, including upgrades to the Koombana Bay Foreshore and Jetty Road causeway.
As the Bunbury waterfront evolves, the community can expect improved public access, upgraded fishing facilities, and potentially a boat lifting service that would greatly benefit local marine enthusiasts. The vision for this area is not just to maintain its marine character but to elevate it into an attractive destination for both residents and visitors.
With the breakwater now finished, attention turns to the next steps in this monumental waterfront project. Local residents and stakeholders are eager to see how these developments will unfold in the coming months, especially as the fishing facility is set to break ground. Community engagement will be crucial as Bunbury prepares for a future that promises to redefine its waterfront experience.
