Bush Bachelor and Bachelorette Winners Donate Prizes to Grief Support

UPDATE: The winners of the 2026 Queensland Country Life Bush Bachelor and Bachelorette competition, Mitch Lynham and Sarah Wheeler, are making headlines for their generous decision to donate their $2,000 prize money to a heartfelt cause. This announcement comes just after their victory at the Bell Races on January 3, 2026, where a record-breaking crowd of 3,020 attendees celebrated their win.

The event saw a staggering 41 percent increase in attendance from last year, reflecting the growing popularity of the races and the impact of community engagement. Sarah Wheeler, known for her remarkable 5,500-kilometre trek called The Outback Long Ride, has a personal mission to support families dealing with grief. After losing both parents by the age of 25, she founded A Daughter’s Way Ltd to assist those experiencing similar losses.

In a powerful statement, Wheeler shared, “Our first retreat is going to be taking about eight people on a horseback trek through the Snowy Mountains. There will be a psychologist involved so people come away from that experience with the tools to navigate and channel their grief, and to just talk and have that community.”

Coincidentally, Wheeler and Lynham’s paths crossed during her Outback journey, and both were astonished by their win. Lynham, a horse starter and trainer, expressed his disbelief, saying, “The Queensland Country Life has been a part of my family’s life for a while… it was pretty astonishing to see photos of myself in the paper.”

Lynham, who previously won a Gold Guitar for heritage song of the year, emphasized the importance of seizing opportunities. “Nothing happens from sitting on the couch,” he remarked prior to the announcement. “I’ve done that for a long time, worrying about what people think, but you just have to live life.”

The competition garnered over 3,150 votes from 19 countries, with Daniel Scott and Megan Seis as the male and female runners-up, respectively. The event has become a major attraction, leading to traffic jams as cars lined up outside the town for entry.

Nathan McNamara, president of the Bell Race Club, attributed the surge in attendance to a combination of factors, emphasizing the community’s enjoyment and the ongoing evolution of the event. “It has been slowly building over time and there is no singular aspect,” he noted. “People are having a good time and the next time they come, as opposed to bringing one or two people along, they are bringing five or six mates. It is a real snowball effect.”

Over 80 singles aged 18 to 35 were nominated for the 2026 QCL Bush Bachelor and Bachelorette competition, creating a vibrant atmosphere and inviting more potential sparks among participants. Both winners are encouraging more people to step forward and join in future competitions, aiming to foster connections and community spirit.

As Lynham and Wheeler embark on their mission to support grieving families, their story is one of resilience, compassion, and community impact. Stay tuned for more updates on their journey and the upcoming events at the Bell Races. This is a developing story that continues to touch hearts and inspire action across Australia.
