Canada and EU Strengthen Energy Cooperation at Paris Meeting

Canada’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Tim Hodgson, met with Dan Jørgensen, the European Commissioner for Energy and Housing, on February 19, 2026, during the International Energy Agency (IEA) Ministerial Meeting in Paris, France. The meeting aimed to bolster Canada-European Union (EU) cooperation on energy security and promote clean growth initiatives.

During their discussions, Minister Hodgson reiterated Canada’s commitment to transatlantic stability and Arctic cooperation. The two leaders explored avenues for enhanced collaboration on multilateral critical minerals initiatives, including the Critical Minerals Production Alliance and the Critical Minerals Action Plan. These initiatives are essential as both Canada and the EU seek to secure sustainable energy resources and reduce reliance on non-renewable sources.

Strengthening Trade and Investment

The discussions also focused on leveraging EU mechanisms to facilitate improved trade and investment relations between Canada and the EU. This includes the EU’s aggregate liquefied natural gas (LNG) purchasing mechanism, which could play a critical role in diversifying energy supplies for EU member states. The meeting was framed within the context of the EU-Canada Strategic Partnership of the Future, which was launched in June 2025.

Minister Hodgson welcomed Commissioner Jørgensen’s commitment to participate in the upcoming IEA Energy Efficiency Ministerial, which Canada will co-host in Montreal in June 2026. Both parties agreed on the importance of accelerating practical cooperation initiatives throughout 2026, recognizing that a collaborative approach is essential for addressing the urgent challenges posed by climate change and energy security.

The meeting underscored the growing recognition of the need for transatlantic cooperation in the energy sector. As countries grapple with the realities of energy transition and sustainability, Canada and the EU are positioning themselves as leaders in promoting clean energy solutions and responsible resource management.

Minister Hodgson’s engagement with Commissioner Jørgensen marks a significant step towards achieving shared goals in energy cooperation, ensuring that both parties can effectively navigate the evolving energy landscape while fostering a sustainable future.
