UPDATE: A childcare centre in Morayfield, north of Brisbane, has been slapped with a hefty $13,500 fine following a shocking incident where a three-year-old child escaped twice in one day, including a perilous encounter on a busy road. The incident, which occurred on August 4, 2023, raises urgent concerns about child safety standards at the facility.
Details emerging from Brisbane’s Magistrates Court reveal that the child managed to climb a perimeter fence and leave the centre unnoticed for almost 30 minutes. During this time, the child was spotted wandering in the middle of a busy road, prompting a concerned member of the public to intervene and return the child to safety. Alarmingly, staff at Day One Early Learning Centre were unaware of the child’s absence until they were brought back.
Just moments after being returned, the child escaped again by scaling the same fence. The Department of Education took decisive legal action against the centre for failing to supervise children adequately and ensure their safety. The court’s ruling not only included the fine but also awarded the department $2,000 in costs, reflecting the serious nature of the offences that could have led to severe injury or even death.
Magistrate Julian Noud emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that the centre was aware of the risks posed by the fence but inadequately managed those risks through supervision, which ultimately failed. This incident follows a similar case involving another childcare centre, Busy Bees at Coorparoo, which was fined $12,500 after staff lost a five-year-old for up to 20 minutes in 2023.
The Early Childhood Regulatory Authority, responsible for overseeing care services, reiterated its commitment to working with childcare providers to ensure they understand their critical responsibility in supervising children. The public reaction has been swift, with many calling for stricter regulations to protect vulnerable children in care.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the vital need for vigilant supervision in childcare settings. Parents and guardians are urged to remain vigilant and ensure their children are in safe environments.
As authorities continue to scrutinize childcare facilities, what happens next could lead to further regulatory changes aimed at enhancing child safety across the board. Stay tuned for the latest developments in this ongoing story.
