City of Gosnells Plants 120,000 Seedlings to Boost Canopy NOW

UPDATE: More than 120,000 locally native seedlings have just been planted across the City of Gosnells as part of an urgent initiative to enhance tree canopy coverage in the southern suburbs. This massive planting effort, which took place from early May to the end of August, aims to boost the city’s tree canopy coverage to 30 percent on land under its control.

The largest projects, located at Harmony Fields Reserve in Maddington and Southern River Confluence Foreshore Reserve in Thornlie, accounted for a staggering 80,000 seedlings combined. These areas are critical as they sit where the Canning and Southern rivers converge.

Mayor Terresa Lynes emphasized the challenges faced by city staff, particularly in wetland and river sections that received substantial rainfall. “The rain has been a good problem to have — while we need to ensure the plants aren’t waterlogged, the additional moisture in the soil this spring will hopefully allow the plants to establish before the summer heat arrives,” she stated.

The city’s reforestation effort is not just about improving aesthetics; it’s about creating healthier environments and habitats. Local green spaces will see increased biodiversity and community engagement as residents are encouraged to participate in these initiatives.

Looking ahead, the City of Gosnells plans to establish a new production nursery, which will enhance planting capacity and diversify species suited to local conditions. This ambitious project aims to cultivate even more plants, further contributing to the urban landscape and environmental health.

For residents seeking guidance on suitable plants and landscaping techniques for their gardens, the city encourages visiting its website for expert advice.

This initiative highlights the City of Gosnells’ commitment to a greener future, making a lasting impact on the community and the local ecosystem. The urgency of this project reflects a growing awareness of environmental issues and the need for immediate action.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as the City of Gosnells continues its mission to enhance urban greenery and improve the quality of life for its residents.
