City Reviews 2025 Bendigo Writers Festival After Major Walkouts

URGENT UPDATE: The City of Greater Bendigo has launched a review into the 2025 Bendigo Writers Festival, admitting it was “not the festival we wanted to hold.” This announcement follows a significant backlash, with over 50 guest speakers withdrawing from the event just days before it was set to open, citing concerns over a controversial code of conduct related to hate speech and anti-Semitism.

The festival, which has been a staple in the community for 15 years, faced mass walkouts that marred its reputation, prompting city officials to seek public input on its future. A new survey is now available for past attendees, authors, hosts, and community members to share their feedback. The survey will remain open until October 27, 2025, and can be accessed at this link.

City of Greater Bendigo chief executive Andrew Cooney emphasized the importance of this review, stating, “It will allow us to reflect on what has worked well in the past and what could be improved.” He added that the review could lead to a complete rethinking of the festival’s structure, including whether it should continue in its current format or shift towards new literary events.

Cooney highlighted the need to understand the community’s views on the festival’s value and the types of sessions attendees have enjoyed. “A key focus of the review is to gather opinions on what people liked most about the festival and how it can be improved,” he said, stressing the significance of input from those who have not attended in the past.

In addition to the survey, the City plans to directly engage with a cross-section of publishers and stakeholders who have previously been involved in the festival’s organization. The aim is to gather a broad array of insights to inform the future direction of the event.

As the city navigates this challenging situation, local stakeholders and community members are encouraged to participate actively in the review process. The outcome of this initiative may reshape the future of the Bendigo Writers Festival, making it more inclusive and reflective of the community’s values.

Stay tuned for further developments as the City of Greater Bendigo works to address these pressing issues and redefine its literary celebration.
