URGENT UPDATE: The Border community is reeling after the passing of Doug McRae, a cherished bagpiper, philanthropist, and family man, who died unexpectedly on August 18, 2025, at the age of 68. His brother, Peter McRae, confirmed the news, stating that Doug’s legacy of joy and kindness will resonate forever in the hearts of those who knew him.
Doug’s melodic bagpipes have long been a defining sound on the Border, and his absence is deeply felt. Peter noted that Doug embodied a zest for life, with passions ranging from sports to music. “He was always full of joy,” shared Margaret McRae, Doug’s wife of 38 years. The couple married on December 19, 1987, and together they raised four children: Craig, Rachel, Lauren, and Duncan, along with seven grandchildren who adored him.
Born on April 6, 1957, Doug’s journey began at Manly Hospital, where he grew up surrounded by his family, which included his half-siblings Wayne Runston and Nolene Phillips. His musical talent started under the guidance of his father and flourished at Knox Grammar School, where he honed his bagpiping skills.
Throughout his career, Doug made significant contributions across various sectors, including his notable role as chief of a private hospital, a position he held until his retirement in 2017. Even after stepping down, he continued to serve on the Albury Wodonga Health Board, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to the community.
Doug’s impact extended to his involvement with the Rotary Club of Albury West, where he served as both treasurer and president, earning recognition as a Paul Harris Fellow. His community spirit was further exemplified by his willingness to assist anyone in need. “He was very generous, always smiling, and wanted to make sure others were smiling too,” Margaret recalled.
In a remarkable achievement, Doug won the world championships in bagpiping in Scotland at the end of 2023, a testament to his dedication and talent. Fellow piper Roger Buck reflected on their shared experiences, stating, “He was a brilliant piper and a friendly mentor who will be sorely missed.”
Peter McRae poignantly summarized his brother’s influence: “Doug’s legacy isn’t just in the way he did things, it’s in the way he made us feel loved, included, and always welcome.”
The community will gather to honor Doug at a funeral service on September 4, 2025, at 11 AM at St Matthew’s Church. As friends and family come together to celebrate the life of this extraordinary man, the sound of his bagpipes will echo in their memories, reminding them of his joyous spirit and the love he shared.
As details continue to emerge, the profound impact Doug McRae had on those around him serves as a powerful reminder of the love and kindness he embodied.
