UPDATE: The community of Uralla is in mourning following the loss of Leonie “Lone” Petrov, who passed away on February 16, 2023. Known as a “beautiful soul” and “rock of the family,” Lone’s impact as a community advocate resonated deeply with those who knew her.
At her funeral, son Ryan Petrov reflected on her multifaceted role within the family, describing her as “the planner, the peacemaker, the doer, the carer, and the wise sage of advice.” Lone, aged 74, succumbed to illness earlier this month, leaving a legacy of kindness and community service that many will remember.
Born in Sydney as the middle child of five, Lone moved to the Uralla region in the early 1970s. She settled in Armidale with her husband Michael and their daughter Jodie. Following the birth of two more children, Ryan and Chris, the family briefly relocated to Beaudesert, where Lone began her involvement in local organizations.
In 1981, they returned to New England, and Lone’s passion for community service flourished. She began her journey as the school canteen lady at Uralla Central School, a role that brought her children closer to their peers. Her dedication to education continued as she taught scripture and ran after-school programs at Rocky River School.
Lone’s commitment to community service intensified in her retirement. She became actively involved in charities including Friends of McMaugh Gardens and the Helping Children and Families Association. “It was always in her nature to give back to the community,” Ryan said, highlighting her desire to make a positive difference.
In 2021, Lone was elected to the Uralla Shire Council, continuing her family’s legacy of public service—her father, Vic Wright, was a former Shire president in the 1980s. Ryan noted, “She was proud to follow in his footsteps.”
Aside from her community roles, Lone was a beloved marriage celebrant, officiating numerous weddings, including Ryan’s. Her family was her greatest joy, especially her seven grandchildren: Grace, Chloe, Oliver, Maddy, Teah, Tobias, and Eli. “Mum always insisted on hearing about everything they did,” Ryan said, emphasizing her pride in their accomplishments.
Colleagues and community members have expressed their sorrow and gratitude for Lone’s contributions. Councillor Leanne Doran described her as “a precious treasure,” while Robyn Newberry highlighted her “incredible contributions” to various community aspects. Fellow residents remember her for her hearty laugh and generous spirit.
As the community comes to terms with this loss, a by-election will be held to fill Lone’s position on the council, ensuring her legacy of service continues. The impact of Lone Petrov will be felt for years to come, as her dedication to family and community sets a standard for all.
This urgent news highlights the profound loss felt in Uralla and serves as a reminder of the vital role community advocates play in shaping lives. Share your memories of Lone Petrov and join in remembering a remarkable woman who left an indelible mark on her community.
